Hove StressBusters Talks & Demonstrations

Just like to say thanks for last week's brilliant presentations. Jelena kicked off with a review of the scientific studies relating to Reiki, really informative. Did you know the electromagnetic frequency measured coming out of Reiki healers' hands is the same as Earth? Fascinating stuff. The second half was a live demonstration and talk by Ian Stones on acupuncture. He talked us through some interesting principles of Chinese medicine and the importance of visiting a qualified practitioner. With some selected highlights from various case studies too, we were all keen to jump up at the end and get a tongue diagnosis. :)

Reiki Healing: An Evidence-Based Practice?
Reiki Through the Eyes of Science     The first half of the event was dedicated to the discussion of Reiki healing. Dr Jelena Nesic, experimental psychologist at University of Sussex and the co-founder of INNERNATION Training & Development, presented an overview of the research which evaluated the benefits of this healing practice.
A number of controlled studies have shown that Reiki and the related clinical practices called the Healing Touch and the Therapeutic Touch have significant positive effects on mood (particularly anxiety) and the physiological stress response in healthy individuals as well as in clinical populations. In particular, a lot of research has been conducted with cancer patients and, in addition to the positive effects on mood and stress levels, one well-controlled study showed that Reiki helps preserve immune function which is usually suppressed by chemotherapy.
The physiological and psychological effects of Reiki were found to be significantly greater than the effects of placebo treatments not just in many studies with human
In vitro studies
participants but also in two studies conducted with rats! Even more surprising were the findings from the test-tube (in vitro) laboratory studies which showed that Reiki suppresses the development of human osteosarcoma (bone cancer) cells while it promotes the development of human osteoblast cells that are necessary for bone formation and growth.
While scientists were able to detect and measure the frequency of the pulsating electromagnetic field emanating from the hands of Reiki and Qigong practitioners, the mechanism by which this can bring about the beneficial effects seen in the studies we discussed is not yet understood within the framework of the scientific approach. The question is: Do we need to understand the underlying mechanism if we can measure an objective outcome?
Two Reiki practitioners as well as people who have been on the receiving end of Reiki healing contributed to our lively discussion by sharing their experiences and insights. We also had the opportunity to see a brief Reiki demonstration by one of our audience members, Marijana Dragojevic. It's important to note Marijana's final comment though. Reiki was just a starting point in her development as a healer and she feels that other forms of energy healing are much more powerful for healing others (as opposed to self-balancing, where Reiki does a good job). A couple of studies that Jelena mentioned also found another form of healing (Reconnective Healing) to be more effective than Reiki. It will be interesting to see more studies in the future examining the effectiveness of different forms of energy healing in a variety of contexts.

Acupuncture: More Than Just Needles
Acupuncture is a system of healing that has been used in China and the Far East for thousands of years. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the smooth flow of our body’s energy. This energy, referred to as Qi, can easily become disturbed or imbalanced and there are many aspects to people’s lives which cause these imbalances. Acupuncture aims to address the imbalances using the insertion of very fine needles along the channels of the body encouraging the body to return to a state of balance and health.
During the second half of last week's event, we had a unique opportunity to observe an actual
acupuncture session!  Ian Stones, experienced acupuncturist and one of the founding members of the Zita West fertility network, started his presentation surrounded by his clinical equipment: the treatment couch, sterile needles, needle disposal and other bits and bobs he might use in his everyday practice.
Acupuncture with Ian Stones     After showing a brief video that summarizes really well what this ancient Chinese healing system is all about, Ian set out to dispel some myths and fears by showing what an acupuncture treatment actually involves. His guinea pig on this occasion was Jelena, who previously had just two acupuncture treatments in preparation for this event (braving her fear of needles!). After painlessly inserting several fine needles into Jelena's face, arms and legs, he left her to rest and started explaining all the different aspects of acupuncture treatment, from the initial consultation to diagnosis and intervention. He discussed the different approaches to treating a wide range of clinical conditions, illustrating his points with interesting case studies from his clinical practice.

Acupuncture is always focused on the individual rather than just their main complaint: the symptoms are viewed within the wider context of the patient's entire medical history, physical and emotional wellbeing, diet and lifestyle.
Because every patient is unique, two people with the identical Western diagnosis will each receive different acupuncture treatments. This is why acupuncture done in hospital settings by specially trained medical staff (NOT professional acupuncturists), or during controlled clinical trials, is very rarely effective: instead of determining insertion points for each individual patient, a specific protocol of needle insertion is always followed for that particular health complaint. We hope that over the coming years, as the medical community is beginning to recognize and accept acupuncture as an effective complementary treatment, the quality of research studies as well as clinical interventions available via NHS will improve!

WHEN OUR SURVIVAL MECHANISM BACKFIRES
Stress & Anxiety: When Our Survival Mechanism BackfiresThe emotional experience of fear and the physiological stress reaction (the 'fight or flight' reaction: increased heart rate, faster breathing, sweating etc.) are very useful responses to dangerous situations or objects: our ancestors had it, apes and mice have it, even reptiles do. If it wasn't for this unconditioned response to danger, most species - humans included - would not have survived the natural selection. Apart from enabling us to fight, freeze or flee in the face of danger, the physiological stress reaction also enables us to learn to avoid the same dangerous situation or object in future.
But what happens when this useful survival mechanism backfires on us as it inevitably does now that we live in an environment where there are very few real dangers to our survival?...
