Emotional Freedom Technique
Emotional Freedom Technique with John Blosse     Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) rests on the assumptions that certain events or life situations cause disruptions in our body's energy system, leading to physical pain, disease or mental illness. We feel negative emotions such as anger, sadness, fear or guilt - these negative emotions take us straight to the core of the issue so when we work with negative emotions we can release the underlying issue. John Blosse, an EFT Master Practitioner, introduced us to this popular technique and ran a very hands-on workshop during which we learned the basic EFT tools that can be applied in everyday situations to reduce our stress levels. Described very simply, EFT involves tapping gently on energy points (mainly on the face and neck area) with our fingertips whilst repeating key phrases that best describe our issue. When we acknowledge how we feel about the issue and accept it instead of fighting it, we come to experience a positive transformation.
During this mini-workshop, each of us focused on an issue that has been causing us stress. John then led us through the sequence of tapping after which we re-evaluated the intensity of negative emotion that the issue evoked. John provided us with a very comprehensive handout that enables us to practice and utilize EFT to control our reactivity to stressors. Ideally, the entire tapping seuqence should be used as described. However, if we require stress relief when we are in a public place (e.g. sitting in a stressful meeting), we could use only some elements of the sequence, such as tapping on the less obtrusive points or breathing "into" the centre of the chest, to calm ourselves down.
Although the premises of EFT may seem a bit vague and unscientific, recent research studies have found it to be significantly more effective than some other psychotherapeutic approaches in reducing biological markers of stress (stress-hormone cortisol) and relieving symptoms of phobias. Quite a few people who came to this event were already familiar with EFT and were eager to share their experiences of this technique. We also had a chance to discuss how different elements of EFT, such as breathing with hands on the centre of the chest, can be incorporated in other therapeutic approaches, when dealing with clients who need to relax and become more centred before or during the therapeutic session.

Reflexology is NOT just a foot massage! This is what Linda Belcher, a Reflexologist and Systematic Kinesiology practitioner, emphasised at the start of her talk. Reflexology is the approach of treating the body and mind through stimulating the reflex points in the feet or hands. By stimulating these reflexes and “reading” areas of disturbance, we can increase the blood flow and energy to the areas of the body that are mirrored therein and help correct the imbalance holistically and non-invasively.
Reflexology with Linda Belcher     Linda introduced us to the basic principles of Reflexology and demonstrated how we can improve our physical and emotional wellbeing by stimulating specific reflex points. Of course, it is fairly difficult to properly stimulate the reflex points on our own feet (unless we are walking barefoot on Brighton beach!) but stimulating reflex points on hands may also be beneficial. Linda showed us a few points on the hands that are related to pituitary and adrenal function (both play a major part in the stress response) and just by rubbing them quite vigorously we can release stress and tension.
While we all kept rubbing the tops of our thumbs, it was really interesting to hear how the knowledge of the Chinese 5 Element Theory and the meridians allows Linda to combine Reflexology and Kinesiology approaches to create a more comprehensive treatment for balancing mind, body and spirit. Linking the discussion back to EFT, we all agreed that combining elements of different techniques results in more rounded and effective treatments and this is precisely what Hove StressBusters aim to provide: a platform where different practitioners can exchange knowledge and develop more integrated approaches that will be of great benefit to their clients.

De-Stress Food of the Month
by Charlotte Watts
(Nutritionist, Yoga Teacher, Co-Author of The De-Stress Diet)

CHOCOLATE Before Europeans added sugar to chocolate, the bitter bean was famed amongst the Aztecs for its health-giving properties. Its Latin name theobroma even means ‘food of the gods’ and this gives name to theobromine, one of the stimulating chemicals chocolate contains, alongside caffeine. This combination of stimulants is good for an energy lift but unfortunately most chocolate products also contain sugar which can add to blood sugar problems associated with stress.
So why is chocolate in the list of stress-busting foods? Well, when it comes to a treat, dark chocolate can be a good snack choice to stave off cravings for less healthy choices. Research has shown that 40g a day can help us cope with stress and it has four times the antioxidants in green tea and twice that in red wine. Raw chocolate has become popular over the recent years because it has less agitating caffeine effect and higher antioxidants than usual roasted beans.
We still don’t fully understand the chemical effect it has on the brain – it may release ‘happy chemicals’ beta endorphins that help us cope with stress and some people may even be sensitive to the ‘love molecule’ PEA (phenylethylamine) which is also contained in the smell of roses and said to evoke feelings of pleasure and euphoria.
