Empowerment Coaching: Overcoming Your Fears

     Many people consider coaching at the point when they feel unhappy about their present life situation and unable to see how to move forward; they stay in unsatisfying jobs and relationships and gradually lose control over their lives. Life coaching is a powerful tool for addressing challenging situations and motivating, inspiring and encouraging people to transform their lives for the better.
Empowerment Coaching: Overcoming Your Fears with Katalin Swann     This month's session demonstrated that working with a qualified life coach is an experience very different from talking to a friend who gives good advice - it is a thought-provoking process which actively guides the client towards finding solutions which are most optimal for their specific circumstances, plans and desires.
     Katalin Swann, the founder of 4H Empowerment Coaching, is an experienced Life Coach specializing in confidence building, stress management/prevention and happiness creation. By taking us through several steps, Katalin helped us understand who we really are and what we like about ourselves, as well as to recognize our fears and how they limit us in different aspects of our life. She challenged our assumptions and our beliefs about these fears, and demonstrated how we can draw our mind away from anxious rumination and towards the reality of the moment and the problem solution. During the session we were able to share positive experiences and see our fears in a different light by recognizing the self-talk which often brings us down without us even realizing it. It became clear how little it could take to shed the issues that are weighing us down, experience the lightness and freedom, and completely immerse ourselves in the positive and empowering feelings and thoughts... we just need a bit of practice!

Energy Arts: Tai Chi & Qigong
Energy Arts: Tai Chi & Qigong with Em Burnett     Em Burnett, energy arts instructor and the founder of Wellspring Internal Energy Arts, gave a very stimulating talk about Tai Chi and Qigong. Because of their gentle healing nature, these Chinese internal energy arts are practised by people of different ages, abilities and states of health.
      During this session we learnt about the 1,500 year old self-healing practice of medical Qigong to regain our natural poise, flexibility and springiness and boost our immunity for optimum health.
     We began our Qigong ('energy cultivation') with the initial Qigong 'presence practice' of tuning in - letting our mind soak into our body, connecting with the breath and how we are aligned. This was followed by a 
simple stress-reducing exercise of body tapping: easy to do every day to promote the flow of our life energy Qi ('chee' or 'chi') and calm our minds, bringing our attentional focus to our own bodies and to the ‘Here and Now’. Although we did not do a full Qigong session, the effects of these exercises were striking and left us wanting more. 
     Over the years, Tai Chi and Qigong have become popular across the world and are becoming increasingly recognized by the Western medical community for their beneficial effects on physical and psychological wellbeing. Many controlled studies have reported beneficial effects of regular practice, including reduction of stress, anxiety and tension headaches, and improvement in a variety of clinical conditions such as fibromyalgia, Parkinson's Disease and many others. That's more than a good reason to practice these exercises on a daily basis!
     For many people in the audience this session was their very first encounter with Qigong and at the end of the session they reported feeling refreshed and soothed by the experience, and curious about the internal energy arts and Em's classes.

3 FREE Rapid Eye Movement Induction Therapy (REMitâ„¢) and/or NLP sessions are offered as part of a new randomized controlled study conducted by Dr Jelena Nesic (INNERNATION Coaching & Development) and Dr Susan Sullivan (University of Sussex). This study aims to validate and extend the REMitâ„¢ method, a novel therapeutic approach which combines NLP, Wingwave Coaching and hypnosis techniques. The study is open to volunteers who wish to address specific anxiety-related issues, including fears, phobias and mental blocks.

Hypnobirthing Pregnancy and birthing can be a special and rewarding experience in a woman’s life. However the thought of giving birth is often a frightening idea to both mums and supporting partners. This fear is mostly a result of cultural conditioning having us believe and expect birthing to be dangerous as well as the most painful experience a woman can have. This is constantly communicated to us in the mainstream media; birthing portrayed as an either very comic or tragic event, but never just as a normal, calm, ‘uneventful’ one. PHONE A FRIEND From time to time we can all get stressed and there is so much good advice on how to tackle it. Starting from taking deep breaths, doing visualisation exercises to reading a poem, or anything from being physically active to meditating, eating healthy snacks (mindfully) and so on. Let’s try a different approach: let’s turn stress into our friend!
     One thing that most of us disregard is that the physiological stress reaction isn’t all bad. The good news is that, amidst all the adrenaline, cortisol and other hormones that help us fight or flee but also have negative effects on our body and emotions, another hormone is also released during a stress episode. This is oxytocin, often called the ‘cuddle hormone’ because it primes the strengthening of close relationships. So, when you’re stressed, simply call a friend and arrange to meet up – chatting over the phone is good, but isn’t a substitute for face-to-face contact. Not only will seeing your friend help decrease your stress level by giving you a chance to unburden, get a different perspective on the problem or simply take your mind off it altogether, but it will be a great bonding experience too.
