Hove StressBusters Talks & Demonstrations

Sedona Method & Hypnosis

In this talk, Maya Zack, a hypnotherapist and Hypnobirthing practitioner and one of the few Sedona Method practitioners in the UK, introduced the group to two fascinating stress-busting tools and the ideas behind them.
The Sedona Method is a personal development tool based on the idea that we are free and unlimited, only limited by our holding on to our past and future stories in our minds.
The basic concept is really rather simple: by saying things such as “I am unhappy” or “I am anxious”, we identify ourselves with these emotions which makes it impossible to separate ourselves from them. In contrast, if we say “I am feeling unhappy” or “I am feeling anxious”, it becomes clear that we are talking about emotions that we are currently experiencing and, as such, we can look upon them as objects that we can either keep or throw away – it is entirely our choice what we do with them. Sedona Method, therefore, applies this approach of objectifying our emotions and uses a set of questions to challenge our determination to hold on to these ‘emotional bubbles’.
Sedona Method & Hypnosis with Maya Zack     Hypnotherapy is a well-established therapeutic approach to treating a variety of psychological problems, including anxiety and other issues which are often related to stress. Its therapeutic effectiveness has been demonstrated in a number of controlled studies and it is endorsed by the NHS, yet there are still many misconceptions about hypnosis, mainly due to the way its portrayed in the media. Simply put, hypnosis is a powerful therapeutic tool which allows us to access our subconscious mind to rid ourselves of unuseful programmes, and to create new experiences and possibilities. Combining hypnosis with the Sedona Method produces very powerful effects: Sedona method rapidly de-programs and clears anything that is not beneficial to us - all subconscious blocks, negative self-dialogue, doubts and fears -, while hypnosis can then re-program and enter any new wanted information and goals we might have!
At the end of her talk Maya led the group into a trance state. This experience is very hard to describe and none of the participants in this demonstration could tell for certain how long it lasted since everyone had a different perception of time. However, everyone agreed on one point: the experience was immensely enjoyable and we all seemed very relaxed and content, not a bit of stress in the air!

Alexander Technique
Alexander Technique is an approach that many have heard of but very few people actually know what it is, other than that it is well established (it's been around for over 100 years), generally well accepted (many performing arts schools have compulsory Alexander Technique classes) and it has something to do with correct posture.
In his talk, Mark Claireaux, an experienced Alexander Technique teacher, described and demonstrated how this technique does much more than just teach people how to maintain correct posture: it relieves chronic pain (especially in the back and neck) as well as improves the way we deal with stressful situations. The idea is that, just as our emotions are reflected in our physical body (muscles clenching during the 'fight or flight' response), we can also achieve the opposite: modulate our negative emotions through relaxing our body. This is also the concept behind other stress-busting techniques such as yoga, but Alexander Technique approaches it in quite a unique way.Alexander Technique with Mark Claireaux
During the session, we had a chance to get a glimpse of what it is that Alexander Technique actually does. We also learned a thing or two about our body (the head is actually a fairly heavy object!) and how unkindly we often treat it.

There have been several well-controlled clinical trials, including a recent NHS-funded trial, which showed Alexander Technique to be superior to other forms of treatment in longer-term management of certain physical conditions such as chronic back pain and even Parkinson's Disease. At the moment there are no clinical trials specifically looking into the stress-relieving properties of this method but judging from our experiences last Wednesday, this is definitely on our top list of stress-busting techniques!

GOAL SETTING - KEEP IT SIMPLE! Some people may say that their goals are too complicated. OK… Keep your goals simple! I know… life is not simple, so the goals in our life are usually complex too. Perhaps you should start by making complex goals more understandable and achievable by breaking them down into smaller goals. Have you tried to break those ‘complex’ goals into group(s) of simple goal(s)? If you have, was it successful? What does it take to achieve a BIG goal? How many small steps do you need to take?
This process of simplifying the goals will also enable you to evaluate if your goal is realistic. If it isn’t (you’ll never be able to fly!), you might decide to abandon it. Alternatively, if it’s something that might be achieved but would take much longer than one year, identify the steps that can be achieved in the next year and work on them.
