Improving Life, Improving Experience                                  Issue 39, January 2015
Hove StressBusters
HAPPY NEW YEAR! January may seem a bit dull after all the excitement (and stress!) of the Christmas season, but it's a good month for having some time for yourself, taking stock  of all your experiences from the past 12 months - good and bad -, and making some fresh starts too. We have taken a break this month to recharge our batteries and are now ready for more stress-busting action in 2015. You can expect new talks & demonstrations, workshops and more in the coming months... Don't forget to spread the word and enable more people to discover effective ways of dealing with stress and enhancing their wellbeing.
Have you visited our website recently? We are always adding new information, interesting articles and links, and there is also an easy to navigate directory of stress-busting techniques and expert practitioners... Enjoy!

Stress-Busting in January

Self-Healing with Qigong                                    by Em Burnett Em Burnett

As we approach a festive frenzy towards the end of the year, our activity levels can often rise whilst the natural environment ebbs - energies previously expanding into growth and productivity go deeper to conserve resources as the nights draw in to Winter Solstice. As the seasonal change to winter naturally draws our attention inwards, we can benefit from following this flow and observe how our energy levels respond and how comfortable we are feeling in our body and mind. Cultivating curiosity through practising qigong, we regularly tune into and optimise our deep reserves of energy ready to expand into spring. During winter, we reflect the gathering process in our practice by taking in more energy than we give out with relaxed effort, letting everything quieten down – helping the mind settle.
Self-Healing with Qigong

‘Being natural’ is a key component of internal energy arts – ancient practical methods of developing harmony and balance to remain smooth and rolling with ease through inevitable change.

       The Benefits of Qigong
On a physical level, qigong develops balance; enhancing stability and rootedness by aligning the body well to reduce compression and impeded function of the organs – the cornerstone of our health. Flexibility and responsiveness practiced in internal energy arts ripple out to all levels of our being. Rooted in Taoism, the Water Method system stems from a deep awareness of the internal balance within our bodies, mind and spirit in all seasons of our lives. ... READ MORE

Why Mindfulness?          by Jo Turner Jo Turner and Dr Jelena Nesic Goranovic Dr Jelena Nesic Goranovic

Mindfulness is the practice of becoming fully aware of the present moment and what you are doing now non-judgementally and completely, rather than dwelling in the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness can be achieved through meditation, but one can also practice mindfulness through daily activities such as eating, walking, cleaning, etc.

Why Mindfulness? As Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk and one of the most highly respected teachers of mindfulness practice in the world, says:
"The practice of mindfulness requires only that whatever you do, you do with your whole being. You have to invest one hundred percent of yourself in doing even very simple things, like picking up a pen, opening a book, or lighting a stick of incense.”
The Art of Power. HarperCollins 2007
During mindfulness meditation we observe everything that passes before our attention, but we do not get caught up in our thoughts - instead, we just stay aware of what is going on in the present moment, acknowledge our thoughts and then just let them pass by. The breath is used as an anchor to the present moment, but, apart from that, no attempt is made to direct the attention.
While Mindfulness has origins in Eastern philosophy and Buddhism, there is no necessary religious component to mindfulness – anyone, with any belief system, can enjoy the benefits of mindfulness. ... READ MORE

TIME FOR DETOX? We wake up on New Year’s day and think we have to implement those resolutions straight away.. like “I will detox now Christmas is over”. Unfortunately detoxing in January will stress your body and is better done in spring when we are able to let go of toxins more readily.
My advice for now is to nurture your bodies with warming soups made with bone broth and loads of veggies, onion, garlic, turmeric, ginger to nourish and support your immune system during winter. And take winter walks down by the sea or in the country daily for those negative ions to uplift and calm your nervous system.

More Stress-Busting in 2015

From February we'll continue with our regular Stress & Anxiety Self-Coaching Support Group meetings on the 3rd Monday of every month @ 7.30pm - 9pm. These monthly meetings present an opportunity to work on your issues in an intimate group setting. During the sessions, you will be able to acquire some useful self-help tools and strategies for managing stress and anxiety, based on a variety of coaching and therapeutic techniques. There is usually plenty of opportunity for brief one on one work with the coach or therapist (session facilitator).
In order to ensure that the group remains small, the number of places is restricted to 10, so pre-booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.

All sessions take place at the Cornestone Community Centre, Church Road, Hove.
for more information or to book a place.

Wishing you all a stress-free weekend and looking forward to seeing you at our next event!
