Improving Life, Improving Experience                                 Issue 1, February 2016
Hove StressBustersFor over four years,  the community wellbeing programme Hove StressBusters has continued to attract a diverse group of practitioners and members of the community, not just from Brighton and Hove but from all over Sussex too. We were introduced to a number of fascinating approaches to physical and emotional wellbeing, and learned many useful tools for combating stress. Have a look at our past events and all the different approaches to stress reduction and wellbeing that we discussed and tried out. We are very excited to have finally branched out into Brighton and set up the community programme at the wonderful Hanover Centre. We look forward to sharing many exciting stress-busting tools and techniques with you in the coming months! :)

Introducing Brighton StressBusters!

The big introductory event is behind us, and what an evening it's been! We moved our chi, played silly games, laughed our hearts out, and got lulled into a hypnotic trance... tackling stress from such different angles. This was a perfect way to kick-start our community programme at the Hanover Centre!

What we've been up to...
During her introductory talk, our Programme Director Dr Jelena Goranovic explained the ideas that led to the creation of StressBusters. Presenting an overview of all the different talks and demonstrations that the group organized over the last 12 months, ranging from Hypnotherapy, Acupuncture and Coaching, to Ho'oponopono, Family Constellations and Jin Shin Jyutsu, was a compelling way to illustrate the eclectic nature of the programme.
Introduction by Dr Jelena Goranovic     As a communication platform for mainstream and alternative wellbeing practitioners, StressBusters programme strives to present as many diverse approaches as possible, both the scientifically-based and validated techniques, and those that have not yet undergone extensive controlled research. The programme's main mission is to enable people to understand the main ideas behind different approaches, the similarities and differences between various theoretical viewpoints, and to discover those wellbeing approaches that work best for them personally.

Tackling stress from different angles
Following Jelena's introduction, we had a chance to experience three very different approaches, each tackling stress from a different angle.
Qigong with Em Burnett     Em Burnett, experienced energy arts instructor got us all to try out several simple stress-reducing Qigong exercise including body tapping: easy to do every day to promote the flow of our life energy ‘Chi’ and calm our minds, bringing our attentional focus to our own bodies and to the ‘Here and Now’.
Laughter Yoga with Emma Hiwaizi     After the break, Emma Hiwaizi led a very amusing Laughter Yoga session. The awkwardness of doing a funny dance, singing silly chants or playing childish games lasted only a few minutes and we soon started to giggle and, at times, even howl with laughter.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy with Jo Alderson     Cognitive hypnotherapist Jo Alderson ended the evening by guiding us into a hypnotic trance where we were able to play around with our 'control board' and adjust the feelings and responses we'd like to overcome.
These three segments were a perfect way to illustrate that there are so many ways to achieve the same effect (manage stress), and that it's all about exploring different approaches to discover the tools that work best for you.
It is safe to say that by the end of the evening we all seemed very relaxed and content, not a bit of stress in the air!

What next?
Just as Hove StressBusters programme isn't what we imagined it would be when we first started it in 2011 - it kind of developed a life of its own from very early on - so we have absolutely no idea what Brighton StressBusters are going to be like! It's up to you all to help us create it, imbue it with a soul, a unique vibe...
The only thing we do know is that StressBusters will continue providing the widest possible coverage of wellbeing-related topics and approaches, enabling everyone to discover the most effective ways to manage their stress, improve their health and further their emotional and spiritual development. It's a place where like-minded people can meet, share their views, knowledge, experience or professional passion, feed their curiosity and simply have fun. The programme is also there to enable wellbeing practitioners to learn from and support each other.
You are welcome to join our Facebook group which is the place for sharing interesting articles and links relevant to stress and wellbeing, follow us on Twitter or like our Facebook page for regular updates. You can also join our Meetup group to receive information about upcoming events. Best of all, it would be lovely to see you in person!
Stress-Busting Library
It’s likely that all of us remember occasions when we have mindlessly reached out for the fridge or the cookie jar at the times of stress. But, although we may have subsequently tried to justify this to ourselves by giving it a harmless enough label ‘comfort eating’, there is nothing comforting about consuming lots of unhealthy food – in fact, more often than not, we ended up feeling worse off as a result: bloated and unhappy.
So, why do we engage in this and other unhealthy or addictive behaviours when we’re feeling stressed, tired or tense? It has been known for a long time that stress plays an important role in the initiation and maintenance of a variety of ‘reward-seeking’ or addictive behaviours. Seems obvious from experience, but it’s only over the last few decades that researchers have begun to explore and understand the neurocognitive mechanisms behind these responses. ... READ MORE

Tip of the Month

WHAT YOU DO TODAY HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR PRESENT BUT IT WILL ALSO SEAL THE FATE OF YOUR FUTURE. The choices you make each day determine what lies ahead of you. It therefore serves you well if you make empowered choices where you embark on something new, complete what you have been postponing to do for a long time, seek opportunities and take the action that you have been afraid to take. Living each day as how you imagine your future self to be, in other words making the choices that your future self would make and courageously take action, will lead you toward a great future.
