The Power of Breathing
We all breathe - not much of a big deal! But the truth is that most of us don't breathe to our full capacity and research suggests that the consequences of this sub-optimal breathing are manifold. In her informative talk, Nicola Price, the founder of the Inspirational Breathing approach, introduced us to the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of breathing and the healing potential of breathwork.
By performing a breath pattern analysis on a volunteer, Nicola made us aware of the different breathing 'issues' that all of us display. Turned out that none of us were breathing optimally! Quite a few people were actually breathing just from the top of their chest, hardly using even 50% of their lungs... that can't be good! The essence of Inspirational Breathing is practising the so-called 'baby breath' or continuous diaphragmatic breath. Learning how to breathe in this fashion and practising it regularly, would enable us to connect to our body, release repressed and suppressed emotions, enhance our mood and also raise the vibration of energy enabling us to achieve higher consciousness.
At first, trying to do this 'breathing meditation' proved to be quite difficult... it just doesn't come naturally: we're used to pausing between breaths and to breathing through our nose (breathing through the mouth can be somewhat unpleasant). But then Nicola got us to do something none of us were expecting: she got us to stretch and dance to some irresistible music. Just two minutes of bouncing about the room were enough to raise our spirits and make the subsequent breathing meditation so much easier and natural. Nicola's unique combination of movement, stretching and breathing meditation - what she calls Yogagroov - is really an ideal way to introduce people to the power of breathing: an opportunity to explore the breath and discover where the physical and emotional resistance lies... and have loads of fun along the way!
Rapid Eye Movement Induction Therapy™
As one of the co-founders of Hove StressBusters, Nikola Goranovic is a familiar face at our events. But, unless you've been to one of his talks in the past, you might not have realized that there is more to him than the dodgy jokes! Nikola is a Master Practitioner as well as Trainer of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and also the first Trainer of Wingwave Coaching in the UK.
In his coaching career, Nikola has worked with a variety of individuals, ranging from those who were looking to enhance their professional performance, to those who wanted to overcome anxiety problems or traumatic experiences. Over the years, the work with anxiety and trauma clients has deepened his interest in one of the components of Wingwave Coaching, the rapid eye movement simulation (also used in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing - EMDR -, the effective psychotherapeutic approach to treating post-traumatic stress disorder). This work has culminated in the development of Rapid Eye Movement Induction Therapy (REM Therapy™): a unique approach which combines NLP, Wingwave Coaching and Hypnotherapy techniques.
In his entertaining talk, Nikola described the rationale for simulating the REM phase of our sleep: research studies have demonstrated that the REM phase is the crucial time when our brain re-processes all the negative emotional experiences we had during the day. Unfortunately, many of the negative emotional experiences we have had during our lifetime are too overwhelming to be wiped out completely just by a good night’s sleep and their effect accumulates over time. This is where the REM Therapy™ comes in: by evoking these, often deeply hidden, negative emotional memories and simulating the REM phase in an awake state, such experiences are effectively re-processed and we become emotionally immune to them so that they can no longer have an impact on our present and future experiences. Hypnotic trance - which we had a chance to experience during Nikola's talk (still carrying that imaginary pillow with me as I'm writing this!) - provides an additional element of our sleep topography, the non-REM sleep, and opens the door to the subconscious, further facilitating the therapeutic process. A fascinating stress-busting approach!

We are a very creative team as we have our different strengths which complement each other and each of us is solely responsible for a different part of the business although we also often advise and support each other. On the other hand, it's a bit of a disaster too, as we sometimes get frustrated with each other - we'd probably be much more polite and kind to co-workers we're not related to! Coaching Tip of the Month
MAKE TIME As we get closer to Christmas, just notice how many coaching tips seem to be popping up everywhere we look: magazines, television, social media... With the end of the year approaching, we are being bombarded by messages that are urging us to create positive intentions and set goals for the New Year. Does that imply that we are lacking goal setting skills?
Being somewhat cynical, I can't help thinking that this flood of tips has the ulterior financial motive: trying to get us to spend more money on things that we want or think we might want. But, cynicism aside, setting goals and positive intentions is something we all know how to do yet we still keep repeating the unhelpful mantra 'I don't have enough time (so I'll buy a watch)'.
Perhaps we simply don't have enough time to achieve all our goals so need to learn to prioritize? So... let's start with the most obvious step. It's easier - and cheaper - to MAKE TIME than to buy a watch... Set yourself the first achievable goal: make time for goal setting! Write everything down and then prioritize...
