Improving Life, Improving Experience                                 Issue 6, July 2016
Brighton StressBusters Welcome to all the new members of our stress-busting community! With so many different approaches to health and wellbeing out there, it is often difficult to choose the right one(s) for you. In fact, some things work for some people and you won't know what works for you until you try. Unfortunately, the lack of information or cost of treatments prevent us from trying out everything that's available which is why we may be missing out on something that would be of great benefit to us. As those of you who already had a chance to attend our events know, we are a community group dedicated to giving people an opportunity to understand stress from different perspectives and also to experience many different wellbeing approaches so that they can find the ones that suit them best. And, of course, we're there to connect like-minded people and promote exchange of knowledge, skills and experience in a fun and friendly environment.
Check out our calendar of upcoming events and join us for some more stress busting over the coming months!

The People's Festival Special
StressBusters @ The People's FestivalWe had a fantastic day at The People's Festival on ‪Hove‬ Lawns last Sunday, basking in the sunshine and positive vibes, and running Qigong, Laughter Yoga, Emotional Detox and Mindful Eating sessions. It was great to chat to so many people and be able to share our skills and enthusiasm, and raise awareness of several different approaches to health and wellbeing.

Massive thanks to the wonderful People's Festival team who worked so hard to organize such a huge successful event at extremely short notice. And, of course, a big Thank You to our stress-busting team - Em Burnett (Qigong), Nikola Goranovic (Emotional Detox) , Emma Hiwaizi (Laughter Yoga), Dr Fenia Giannopoulou (Mindful Eating) and Dr Jelena Goranovic (Psychologist & StressBusters Programme Director) - who managed to convey to everyone what StressBusters' events are all about: expanding your horizons, breaking the boundaries and exploring the different wellbeing approaches to find the ones that work for you. Hope to do this again next year!

Brighton StressBusters Talks & Demos

Lovely to see several new faces last Friday at our monthly stress-busting evening at the Hanover Centre‬! Big thanks to Debbie Brown and Tali Rose for their inspiring and engaging sessions, presenting the two body-based approaches which stem from very different traditions but seem to have so many overlaps.
We loved the new space - this month the event was held in the Lower Hall of the Hanover Centre - and we hope to stay there from now on as it has such a lovely vibe :) And, of course, it was great to catch up with everyone at the fabulous Dover Castle pub after the event. Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you all again in September!

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
Deborah Brown, a biodynamic craniosacral therapist, presented the theory behind this effective healing system. Based on whacky experiments conducted at the beginning of the 20th century, Dr Sutherland, an osteopath, revealed that our cranial (skull) bones move all the time (poor Mrs Sutherland though, for having to put up with a husband who kept wearing a ridiculous skull cap!). Based on these observations, as well as on the serendipitous finding by Dr Upledger in the 1970s that cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid which surrounds our brain and spinal cord) has its own regular pulse, craniosacral therapy has evolved into a complex art of healing.
Craniosacral Therapy with Deborah Brown     This unusual therapeutic approach encompasses several different therapies, yet all of them are based around the idea of enabling the body to realign to its natural health, restoring motion and vitality. Like with many such empirically-based techniques, it is as yet not clear what the true mechanism of its effectiveness is, but many client reports as well as a few clinical outcome studies conducted until now confirm its benefits (visit for an overview of research studies).
In addition to explaining the origins of craniosacral therapy and its relevance to stress reduction,
Debbie also taught us how to focus on our body and feel more centred and grounded - a state which is usually attained during the craniosacral treatment. She then went on to demonstrate what a typical session might involve. Unfortunately, with this therapeutic approach, there is very little that can actually be observed by an outsider, so gaining first-hand experience is absolutely essential. Although only one of us was lucky enough to get onto Debbie’s couch last Friday, we were all able to appreciate the powerful connection between the therapist and the client, and the profound relaxation the taster session produced.  Merely observing the treatment was a fascinating experience for the whole group, evoking an almost trance-like state of calmness and awe!

Movement Matters
A variety of movement-based embodied contemplative practices are developed around the idea that the body carries wisdom and has the potential to affect the mind as well as the other way around. In ancient times we know people danced as a part of life, to mark rites of passage, to express and move through times of grief, conflict and celebration. The same needs to happen today to remember our purpose and our place among things.
Movement Matters with Tali Rose     Tali Rose presented the approach called Movement Matters which evolved from her dance movement psychotherapy training and work, as well as various other movement practices she explored over the last ten years. Following a brief introductory talk, Tali got us all moving to some lovely music and we had the opportunity to experience for ourselves what Movement Matters is all about: we were able to move in all our variations, thus practising flexibility and freedom in our body.
It was fascinating to explore our three-dimensional relationship with the inner and outer universe, feeling blissful and energized afterwards.

Apart from feeling very relaxed – spaced out even – after this practical session, the potential psychological effects of this approach that Tali told us about at the beginning became more easy to understand. Essentially, the purpose of Movement Matters is to understand our attitudes towards ourselves, towards others and towards our world. This insight, in turn, frees up the mind and fixed beliefs, and enables us to feel centred within our internal and external space – both during the practice and, more importantly, in our everyday lives. By becoming aware of how we move in our everyday lives we can highlight our choices and move into our full potential of being, cultivating the attitude of being delighted with who we are, can be and what we have to offer in this world.
This is definitely one of those approaches that no amount of writing could truly capture - it really needs to be experienced to be appreciated!

Coaching Tip of the Month
by Nikola Goranovic
Performance & Life Coach and NLP Trainer)
SMALL IS THE NEW BIG How many times have you had a BIG plan? Or even better… When was the last time you dared to think big?
Let’s approach our plans and actions from a different angle!

If you set yourself to achieve several smaller goals, you will have more chance of success. Chunk everything down and start doing... achieving... NOW. You'll be able to make more specific plans and at the same time you will achieve more. Not only that every small goal will feel less intimidating, but you will also have more time to do things instead of spending time preparing and thinking about everything you have to do to achieve the big goal.
Achieving a BIG goal is nothing more than achieving a big sum of many SMALL goals...
1. Find time and opportunity to work on the small goals - Action time
2. Check what you've done previously - Enjoy your success!
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 as many times as you need - Multiply your achievement
