Another year is coming to an end and what an exciting year it has been! Over the last twelve months, Hove StressBusters continued to attract a diverse group of practitioners and members of the community, not just from Hove but from all over Sussex too. We were introduced to a number of fascinating approaches to physical and emotional wellbeing, and learned many useful tools for combating stress. Have a look at our past events and all the different approaches to stress reduction and wellbeing that we discussed and tried out. We are looking forward to a well-deserved Christmas break but we have already started planning new stress-busting activities for 2016.

Hove StressBusters Talks & Demonstrations

Last week's event was the perfect way to end another year of stress-busting in Hove. We'd like to thank our speakers Julie Rawnsley and Shirley Archibald for sharing their professional passion, knowledge and skills with the group and, of course, our wonderful audience for contributing to a lively discussion and supporting the demonstration. Finally, we'd like to wish happy birthday to the lovely Millie Ferguson, our nutritional therapist, who brought her yummy birthday cake to share with us... And with the inevitable mince pies (well, it's the season, isn't it?!), we were really spoiled for choice!  The last installment of stress-busting at the pub after the event was as interesting as ever - lovely to see you all and learn so many new things... though we still haven't resolved the question of the antimatter!

Ayurveda and Health
Ayurveda with Julie Rawnsley     We were very pleased to host our first talk ever on the topic of Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India which has been practised for over 2,000 years in Asia and is now becoming popular in the West. Although ayurvedic hospitals are common in India where they co-exist with hospitals offering Western medical treatments, the focus of this traditional approach is not only on treating illnesses and restoring balance and wellbeing. Instead, the Science of Life - that's what Ayurveda means in Sanskrit - also focuses on the prevention of disease using diet, herbs and treatments.
     In this engaging talk, Julie Rawnsley, an experienced Ayurvedic Practitioner and Amnanda therapist & trainer, pointed out that books on Ayurveda tend to focus on self-help measures so that we can be proactive about our health. There are six stages of disease and, if we recognise them early enough and respond to the subtle cues that our body is giving us we can prevent escalation into subsequent stages. However, as the disbalance progresses and depending on the stage of a disease, other interventions are sometimes needed to bring us back into balance.
     The tools used for healing in Ayurveda include herbal remedies and a range of treatments. Julie introduced us to one such treatment that she increasingly uses in her clinical practice: the Amnanda Process. Amnanda is based on the idea that traumatic experiences throughout our lifetime are stored as crystalline structures in the connective tissues of our body, causing disruption in our physical and mental wellbeing. In this therapeutic process which consists of a series of twelve treatments using special oils prepared with mantras, the oil is used as the vehicle for transformational change. The therapeutic process unfolds over the course of a year, with the oil gradually removing the stored crystalline structures at the cellular level.
     So what can we do to prevent, stop or reverse the disbalances in our own body, mind and spirit? Julie spoke about sattwa, the quality of mind which allows us to ‘see things as they are’. She emphasised that change is only possible when we have come to the point of acknowledging what is really going on in our lives. We can increase sattwa by meditation, spiritual practices and voluntary work and by eating freshly cooked rather than processed or leftover food. Let's not forget to nurture our sattwa over the festive period...

Matrix Reimprinting

     Most people interested in personal development and alternative approaches to wellbeing would have heard of the Emotional Healing Technique (EFT) which dissolves negative emotions by tapping at different energy points on the body. In fact, EFT has been the topic of several Hove StressBusters talk & demo events and, more recently, we ran several EFT-based Stress & Anxiety Self-Coaching Group sessions. It is therefore not surprising that we were so eager to find out more about Matrix Reimprinting, a therapeutic approach derived from EFT.
Matrix Reimprinting with Shirley Archibald      Shirley Archibald, an EFT and Matrix Re-Imprinting Practitioner, started off by introducing us to the ideas behind EFT and teaching us the basic tapping sequence. We used this sequence in a practical exercise where we focused on setting goals for the New Year, and identifying and working on dissolving the obstacles to their fulfilment.
     Shirley then went on to introduce and demonstrate Matrix Reimprinting, the technique developed by her teacher, EFT Master Karl Dawson. This fascinating technique merges EFT with the concepts from quantum physics and epigenetics. It is based on the idea that we hold traumas and stressful life experiences as pictures or holograms in the energy field which is all around us (our 'body-field' or matrix). Conceptually, this is not dissimilar to the crystalline structures in our connective tissues that are the focus of the Amnanda Process described by Julie. Shirley explained how we
keep tuning into these pictures on a subconscious level so that they keep affecting our present thoughts and actions, our health and wellbeing.
     Working with a volunteer, Shirley demonstrated how this technique can be used to help clients clear many of their deep-set patterns and issues by disentangling the complex network of memories, identifying the stressful experiences from their past and letting go of the negative energy attached to these experiences. While EFT takes the emotional intensity out of memories so that they no longer have the sufficient 'charge' to impact on our present self, Matrix Re-Imprinting goes a step further: it accesses the subconscious memories in order to transform them and create more resourceful states. This approach has been used to resolve trauma, depression, anxiety, addiction, pain and relationship difficulties, to name but a few.
     As Shirley pointed out, changing the memory of past traumas is not the same as denying they ever happened, but it frees us from the influence such experiences - often unbeknownst to us - have on our present and future.

More StressBusting in 2016

With another busy year behind us, our commitment to improving wellbeing in our local community continues with even more stress-busting activities planned in 2016.

Our programme of events aims to raise awareness and improve access to a variety of effective wellbeing approaches. In addition to the monthly Talk & Demonstration evenings, the programme will continue to include regular Mindfulness, Qigong and Family Constellations sessions, as well as the monthly Stress & Anxiety Support Group sessions run by the multi-disciplinary team of StressBusters practitioners. We are also preparing to run a Trauma & Stress Release Exercise (TRE) workshop in March, as a pilot for a possible monthly group.
All sessions take place at 
Cornestone Community Centre, Church Road, Hove.

De-Stress Food of the Month

Christmas should not be all about unhealthy food choices...
CHOCOLATE Before Europeans added sugar to chocolate, the bitter bean was famed amongst the Aztecs for its health-giving properties. Its Latin name theobroma even means ‘food of the gods’ and this gives name to theobromine, one of the stimulating chemicals chocolate contains, alongside caffeine. This combination of stimulants is good for an energy lift but unfortunately most chocolate products also contain sugar which can add to blood sugar problems associated with stress. So why is chocolate in the list of stress-busting foods? Well, when it comes to a treat, dark chocolate can be a good snack choice to stave off cravings for less healthy choices. Research has shown that 40g a day can help us cope with stress and it has four times the antioxidants in green tea and twice that in red wine. Raw chocolate has become popular over the recent years because it has less agitating caffeine effect and higher antioxidants than usual roasted beans.
We still don’t fully understand the chemical effect it has on the brain – it may release ‘happy chemicals’ beta endorphins that help us cope with stress and some people may even be sensitive to the ‘love molecule’ PEA (phenylethylamine) which is also contained in the smell of roses and said to evoke feelings of pleasure and euphoria.
*** December Drinking Tips ***
December is the season of partying and, for most of us, that almost inevitably involves drinking alcohol. So what can you do to ensure that you wake up without a hangover from hell feeling guilty or embarrassed about what you said to your boss the previous night?

Following these simple drinking rules will help you drink safely, stay in control and avoid the hangover the next day:
- Eat before/with your drinks
- Don’t mix your drinks (those rounds of Sambuca shots were NEVER a good idea!)
- Take soft drinks or water in between the rounds of alcohol
- Have a glass or two of water before you go to sleep
- If you're don't feel too queasy, take a vitamin C tablet before going to sleep

So eat, drink and be merry - and get home safely!
