Hove StressBustersAnother year is coming to an end and what an exciting year it has been! Over the last 12months, Hove StressBusters have continued to attract a diverse group of practitioners and members of the local community. We were introduced to a number of fascinating approaches to physical and emotional wellbeing, and learned many useful tools for combating stress. Have a look at our past talk & demo evenings and all the different approaches to stress reduction and wellbeing that we discussed and tried out. We are looking forward to a well-deserved Christmas break but we have already started planning new stress-busting activities for 2017.

Hove StressBusters Talks & Demos

Last week's event was the perfect way to end another year of stress-busting in Hove. We’d like to thank our wonderful speakers Millie Ferguson and Nikola Goranovic for sharing their professional passion, knowledge and skills with the group, and, of course, our wonderful audience for contributing to a lively discussion and getting involved in the juicing demo. The last instalment of stress-busting at the pub after the event was as interesting as ever - lovely to see you all!
Detoxing with Nutrition
    December is the time of over-indulgence for many: from party nibbles, rich finger foods and alcohol, to heavy-duty Christmas dinner, chocolates and desserts washed down with yet more alcohol. And this is all just on top of the metabolic by-products that our body generates every moment as well as the environemntal toxins that we're exposed to all year round: in our food, drinks, cosmetic products, air... Our body is pretty good at eliminating these toxins, but there is only so much that our body can dispose of at any given time. Once this capacity is reached,  toxins can get sent back into circulation, causing discomforts and illness.
     Millie Ferguson is passionate about her work. As a qualified Nutritional Therapist, she teaches people how to restore balance and support their body in dealing with the everyday stressful challenges that are an inevitable part of the modern life. During the talk we gained an insight into how our body functions, where the toxins come from and what happens when our elimination processes can't keep up with the acummulation of toxins in the body. the complex interaction between our brain, endocrine and immune functions.
Nutritional Detox with Millie Ferguson     After a very informative talk and discussion, we had a chance to sample several nutrient-packed juices (the beetroot detox one with a dash of ginger cordial added to it was delicious!) as well as make our own green juice and smoothies. We experimented making two batches of the green juice varying proportions of kale, celery, apple and other greens - the second one tasted infinitely better than the first! Here are some detox recipes from Millie's handout for you to try at home.
     Millie's talk & demo enabled us to appreciate the importance of detoxification and showed us how simple it actually is. Providing our body with adequate nutritional support does not mean having to radically change what we eat - it's just about tweaking our daily food intake and introducing something as simple as these delicious home-made juices or smoothies. Very inspiring!
Mindful Self-Coaching
     As well as being a time of over-indulgence, December is also the time when many people start planning to turn a new leaf or achieve new things in the New Year. But from our past experience we know only too well that come the end of January, most of those 'New Year resolutions' will already be a thing of the past - 'to do' lists lying forgotten at the bottom of a drawer and annual membership cards (gym, cinema...) that are unlikely to be used more than a few times. So how can we change this pattern and actually convert our intentions and goals into reality, creating the life we want?
Mindful Self-Coaching with Nikola Goranovic     A familiar face at our events, Nikola Goranovic is a skilled Coach, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) Trainer, as well as the co-creator of REM Induction Therapy (REMit™). Over the years he has developed a unique approach to self-development: the Life Strategist programme which is based on the premise that we can all become our own best coach as long as we learn how to listen ourselves, observe our thoughts, emotions, behaviour and the world around us. By learning mindful self-coaching skills - a mix of Mindfulness, Performance Coaching, NLP and Life Coaching spiced up with Lazy Efficiency lifehacks - we can all become autonomous decision-makers, using  our own insights instead of relying on gurus and s(h)elf-help books.
   While he might not be quite cut out for a career on the stand-up comedy circuit, in this talk Nikola used humor in a very effective way to highlight the main points: how we get stuck in the same ineffective reaction patterns and get carried away by negative emotions, which impairs our judgment and ability to overcome unfavourable situations. And while we were able to laugh at his silly examples and dodgy jokes, the sad truth is that we could all recognise ourselves and our own thoughts and behaviours in many of these examples of self-sabotage and mindlessness.
     Self-development is a process which goes far beyond making simple decisions to start/stop doing something. It starts by first getting to know ourselves - learning to just Be, Listen and Think. Once we have mastered these simple techniques, we then become better able to set the goals that are truly our own and that fit into the 'bigger picture' of the life that we actually want. Such goals inspire more dedication, produce more successful outcomes and prompt us to set further goals and achieve even more... one step at a time!

More StressBusting in 2017

With another busy year behind us, our commitment to improving wellbeing in our local community continues with even more stress-busting activities planned in 2017.

Our programme of events aims to raise awareness and improve access to a variety of effective wellbeing approaches. In addition to the monthly
Talk & Demonstration evenings, the programme will continue to include regular Qigong, Family Constellations and Trauma & Stress Release Exercise (TRE) sessions, as well as the Life Strategist self-development programme of courses and workshops. The Mindful Eating programme also continues, with the addition of the advanced 8 week course and a masterclass planned for March.

We also have a daytime three week self-development course in the pipeline - more info soon!

Christmas De-Stress Tips

STRESS-FREE CHRISTMAS DINNER Believe it or not, your traditional Christmas dinner is one of the best stress-busting meals you can have - turkey providing plenty of tryptophan which makes us feel mentally well, relaxed and even sleepy (as it converts to serotonin and melatonin). All the trimmings may well include lovely herbs – sage, rosemary, thyme – all wonderful stress reducing herbs. And plenty of seasonal veg to give us all the micronutrients we need. 
Top stress-busting tip: do most of the preparation the day before, even cooking the turkey. This all helps to reduce stress on the day and frees you up to really enjoy being with family, going out for a walk on the seafront, cosying up by the fire to play games. A wonderful stress-free Christmas is in store!

GOAL SETTING - ONE STEP AT A TIMEEffective Goal Setting - One Step At A Time
     Have you ever had a daydream of going somewhere really nice…or planned a holiday? How was it? Good? Refreshing? Inspiring? Energizing? Just by thinking about a holiday and making detailed plans for it (including all the activities that you might include or avoid) can give a great sense of achievement. It is wonderful to have that feeling, to achieve something and know how good you are... is it not?
     Sometimes though, at the end of our daydream about that “dream” holiday, we might suddenly find ourselves in a much less rosy place. We realise that the dream is “just a dream”, the reality is less colourful and that our ‘outstanding’ bank balance is below zero.

December is the season of partying and, for most of us, that almost inevitably involves drinking alcohol. So what can you do to ensure that you wake up without a hangover from hell feeling guilty or embarrassed about what you said to your boss the previous night?

Following these simple drinking rules will help you drink safely, stay in control and avoid the hangover the next day:
- Eat before/with your drinks
- Don’t mix your drinks (those rounds of Sambuca shots were NEVER a good idea!)
- Take soft drinks or water in between the rounds of alcohol
- Have a glass or two of water before you go to sleep
- If you're not feeling too queasy, take a vitamin C tablet before going to sleep

So eat, drink and be merry - and get home safely!
