De-Stressing with the
Sound & Voice Playshop and Cognitive Hypnotherapy

Philip Milburn & Jo Alderson
Professional music leader Philip Milburn aims to empower people to express themselves with their voice – his attitude is that anyone can do it and you can’t get it wrong! His experience as a facilitator lead him to discover that consciously playing with sound and voice enables the expression and release of thoughts, feelings, stress and mental clutter, thus benefiting our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Participants can have fun, build their confidence and feel inspired and supported by a group voice experience. The process is energising, uplifting, empowering, relaxing, and ultimately, healing; you may float out of the door with your energy transformed. The muddle of life is expressed and we come back to our centre – back to ourselves. In this practical introduction to his techniques and the 'Sound and Voice Playshop', Philip will guide us in playful, creative session in which we shall use the voice as a tool for self-expression, relaxation and meditation. This is not a choir, and no voice experience is required – it’s open to all!

Hypnosis is a natural and safe state of deep, mental and physical relaxation and comfort, in which there is a narrowed inner focus and heightened awareness within the subconscious mind. It is an altered state of consciousness which opens up the way to bringing about change at the subconscious level. Cognitive Hypnotherapy is unique combination of hypnosis and some of the most effective therapies available, such as NLP, positive psychology and gestalt therapy. Because it taps into our own resources and into the unconscious mind which runs the way we are living and experiencing our life, the changes achieved are deep and lasting. Jo Alderson has been helping people find freedom from anxiety, stress, unwanted habits and phobias using this approach for 9 years. During this session Jo will provide us with an opportunity to experience Cognitive Hypnotherapy and demonstrate how it helps clients achieve flow and freedom from old habits, maladaptive behaviours and automatic responses.

More Stress-Busting This Autumn
We're very excited to announce the new weekly Stress & Anxiety Support Group run by a dedicated multidisciplinary team of Hove StressBusters' practitioners. These meetings present an opportunity to work on your issues in an intimate group setting.
Based on the experience of running monthly support group sessions since February 2013 and the feedback we received, each calendar month will be dedicated to a particular stress-related issue. All sessions in that month will tackle that particular issue using different therapeutic and coaching tools and techniques.

September 2015: Autumn Falls - Feeling 'Stuck'

Some of us dread autumn. The summer holidays are over and it’s back to the routine: the adults to work and the children to school. Coming back to reality and the cold months ahead can make us anxious. If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, and get even more worried about your procrastination, perhaps this month’s support group can help you. Together, we can unravel patterns of what makes you feel the way you feel, and help you to flow.

This month's Stress & Anxiety Support Group sessions will help you address the following issues:
· Overwhelm
· Feeling stuck on moving forward into autumn
· Feeling worried and upset because you're procrastinating

Tip of the Month

CUT DOWN ON STIMULANTS We’re not talking about the illegal sort, although you should probably stop those too. No, it’s the natural caffeine that is in our 17 cups of coffee and the 4 sugars we put in them.
Caffeine in moderation isn't all that bad for you so enjoy a cuppa guilt-free, just don't overdo it. Moderation really is the key here, as you want to avoid having caffeine overdose and withdrawal symptoms or extreme fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Stabilising your sugar levels will help you shake off mood swings associated with stress. If you have a major sweet tooth, then at least substitute sugar with healthier options with lower glycemic index whenever you can.
Cutting out the cigarettes will also have a boosting effect on your mood. Contrary to the misconception that nicotine calms you down, you would actually be much calmer if you did not smoke - smoking a cigarette simply reverses the withdrawal symptoms (anxiety, tension, irritability) that you start experiencing about 30 minutes after every cigarette....
