who is leaning forward smiling or making eye contact with you. Give this person 100% of your
attention. Then move on to the next interested person. Ignore the ones who are texting.

Thank you for your question. We focussed on "Making An Entrance" in our last issue (June 2012) based on your question and it's now time to plan your memorable speech finale.
Think of a finale as a delicious taste lingering on the tongue. If your speech was a flavour, what would it be? The lingering velvet of chocolate or a sharp, tangy citrus?
I reckon audiences want to be
and in that order. If you engage your audience first, they will listen to your information which if inspiring, will motivate them into action. The combination of these 3 things make you and your speech memorable.
What You Can Do
A speech with a flashy entrance and finale and a lacklustre in-between, is a like an empty sandwich. A speech without substance leaves people hungry and not in a good way. Feed your audience tasty morsels that engage, inform and inspire throughout your presentation. Give 'em something to chomp on!
At the beginning of your speech,
tell the audience what they can expect to get from you at the end. Know what your audience hungers for and promise that. This keeps your audience engaged and wondering how you are going to deliver their goodie at the end.
Always deliver what you promised,
and be careful not to make outrageous claims. Disappointment is also very memorable and not in a good way. If you say you're going to give them "5 steps", them give them "5 steps". If you say they will understand the new business model, make sure they do to the best of your ability.
Telegraph your audience,
when you are winding up by using specific language so they will be receptive to your finale. If people are still caught up in the "inform" middle section of your talk and don't realise you've moved into the "inspire" finale, they can end up confused or just not ready to take the next step with you.
Repeat your main points,
take aways, actions to follow or how to contact you and slow your speech down abit more, using slightly longer eye contact to ensure people are following you.
In the same way you practiced your Grand Entrance, you need to practice your Big Finale using clear body language, directive words and action. Don't just tell them you are finished, show them you are finished!
And now, one of the most difficult things to do according to my clients: stay still, hold the space - and receive your applause and acknowledgement. You've just given to your audience, now it's your turn to receive. Ever dismissed a compliment and seen the hurt look on your friend's face? Well, not taking your applause is like that. Complete the giving and receiving cycle and then it's time to walk away, head high, still engaged with your audience until you leave the space.
