School's discussing some heavy topics tomorrow.

The Coeur d'Alene School Board just announced that there will be a special board meeting tomorrow at 12:00pm. Topics will include a levy presentation, guidance around quarantining when masks are worn, and policies/procedures for counselors. A few of these issues were brought up in the last regular board meeting, and this is the "workshop" they added to the schedule to discuss these specific topics.

A quick reminder of the three topics mentioned above:

  1. Levy Presentation - This is the most recent version of the $20M levy they will be asking the public to vote on in the March elections. The levy money is to help fund teachers and continue programs that they offer at their schools. This levy is to bring in money above and beyond what the State of Idaho already gives them on a yearly basis.
  2. K-12 School Guidance Quarantine When Masks Are Worn - Any time the issue of Covid and masks are in the discussion, it's definitely one to watch.
  3. Procedures/Policy for Counselors - This stems directly from the situation coming out of Northwest Expedition Academy where the counselor, principal, and school attorney colluded together and deliberately went behind the parent's back to try and counsel a 10-year-old girl into becoming transgender.

If you have a desire to add your thoughts to any of those agenda items, I urge you to send an email to the board at

There are some policy changes up for review right now including multiple changes to those policies around sexual harassment. I urge you to check them out, a lot of them are just some word changes, but there may be something in there that really rubs you the wrong way. No pun intended. lol

If you would like to make a comment about any of the policy changes, please email Pam Westberg at Comments are due by January 25th.

If you do comment, remember that your comment MUST include your first and last name.  If you include information that would otherwise be protected (such as education records protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act [FERPA]), you are consenting to disclosure of the same.  Public comments are subject to Idaho's public records laws.
