News and Reflections of and about Northwest Yearly Meeting
NWYM is a Christ-centered, discerning, inter-generational community of Friends, committed to discipleship and outreach to impact society locally and globally.
Dear NWYM Family,
Thank you for your support for what the Lord is doing in and through our family of churches! During this past year, God has been faithful to help us in the midst of our season of transitions – with several new people serving on boards and committees, new relationships organizationally (such as Evangelical Friends Mission as our “sending” missions agency), new NWYM officers, and yes, a new Superintendent who has spent much time listening and learning!
At our annual sessions last summer, I urged us to embrace a “Fresh Vision” – for the Lord and for others, as well as to see more clearly our potential to make a difference in this world for Christ. I’m convinced more than ever that the Lord is not yet finished with evangelically-minded Friends in the Northwest! There are many more people who can be reached through our existing churches, and many more new churches that we need to prayerfully, strategically, and actively begin in the days ahead!
Be encouraged! As I have visited this past year with all of our pastors and many other leaders and churches, here are some of the kinds of things that people in NWYM have been saying to me:
“I see hope in NWYM, and that hope, more than anything, comes from the Gospel and its recapturing of the hearts of the saints of the Yearly Meeting!” (Kevin Davis, Woodland Friends, ID)
“It is good to feel that we can rejoice about what God is doing in and through NWYM and to have the desire to increase participation and support of NWYM ministries!” (Jon Fodge, Peninsula Friends, WA)
“It's refreshing to hear different groups of people talking and dreaming of planting churches and expressing interest in the recording process!” (Joy Lujan, Whitney Friends, ID)
“I appreciate the focus and the direction of NWYM in the last year. We have a renewed experience of being united in purpose and message!” (Ken Comfort, Clackamas Park Friends, OR)
What is happening with the “Budget Challenge?” Over one year ago at our annual sessions, the Clerk of our Elders, Phil McLain, issued a challenge for 100 additional donors to give $1,000 each to help us fully fund the ministries and vision of NWYM for 2019. This “Budget Challenge” was intended to be “above and beyond” regular giving to a local church or to the Yearly Meeting. So far, nearly $43,000 has been given – and we are so thankful – but there is much more to do! We have not yet met our goal, but we remain in the black through other undesignated gifts and careful holds on spending. As we finish this calendar year, any additional “Budget Challenge” funds will apply to our original budget objectives and help us to take strategic steps forward in ministry and outreach in the months ahead.
Every person is important! Would you be willing to pray with me about our needs and what the Lord would have you do? To participate, click here or send a check to NWYM Office, 200 N Meridian St, Newberg, OR 97132, "Attn 2019 Budget Challenge". Thank you for considering this opportunity to make a significant difference!
May the Lord bless you in this Christmas season and in the New Year!
Because of Christ,
Jim Le Shana
