This is Ariana Hall, reporting again from the GFU/NWYM archives! At this point in the semester, I’m knee-deep in school and work projects, but one of my favorites has been going through and processing a collection of records, photos, videos, and other media pertaining to the NWYM of Friends youth activities.

This collection is so varied! There are all sorts of records, photos, and promotional materials on everything from Youth Yearly Meeting to the individual youth events like Samuel School, Midwinter, Tween Camp, and YCEW. I’ve been learning a lot specifically about young adult Friends leadership throughout the different camps and events.

At this stage in my internship, the archivist (Rachel Thomas) has walked me through all the steps on how to process, preserve, and arrange all of the materials in this collection. I have also created a “finding aid” to make researchers aware of the collection, and help them know what the collection includes, as well as short descriptions of the materials. The result is 33 boxes of well-organized materials from the collection and a shiny-new online finding aid!

The “arrangement,” or organization, part of processing the collection has been my favorite so far. This collection was varied, as I had different materials, different subjects, and different years to work with. While organizing, I found it helpful to first lay everything out around me, so that I could take stock of what was there. After I had decided on arrangement I could then begin to pick and choose how to organize within different categories and begin to box everything up.

It feels amazing to have all the pieces of the collection organized and safely tucked away in archives-standard folders and boxes! From here on out, we can be assured that the materials are well preserved for the future, and are arranged in a way that researchers will find helpful.

The next step in my internship will be to organize an outreach event centered around the collection. I’m just starting to brainstorm ideas, but at this point in my internship, I know that outreach is an essential step in the archival process. After all, the archive would be a very boring place if no one was interested in it or came to do research!

Transition Team Appointed



In the public statement provided by the Administrative Council regarding the restructure of NWYM, it called for a Transition Team.  This group will include elders, administrative council members, trustees and other at-large members to facilitate the creation of a newly formed yearly meeting.    It is the intent of the administrative council, that churches separating from NWYM during this restructuring process may retain ownership of their church property, assuming any indebtedness.  All other issues of property, assets, and related organization questions raised because of the restructuring process will be addressed by that Transition Team. The Transition Team is to be appointed by the Administrative Council and reports to them.
 
The Administrative Council has approved the following members:

At-Large – Mark Ankeny, Silas Olson, David Peyton and Lorraine Watson
Superintendent – Retha McCutchen
Calling all Pastors, Seminary Students, Friends Serving Abroad, and Ministry Leaders in Northwest Yearly Meeting to Pastors Conference, April 17-20 at Twin Rocks Friends Camp. Our speaker this year will be Colin Saxton. Worship and other activities are being planned by Rich Miller, Matt Boswell, Deb Climer, Angela Kantz, Paul Almquist, Leslie Murray, and Shawn McConaughey. Update on NWYM Superintendent Search 


The work of the Superintendent Search committee has been temporarily suspended as our yearly meeting proceeds through the restructuring process presented at mid-year boards January 27 and 28.   Retha McCutchen has agreed and been approved to continue serving as Interim Superintendent through the restructure.  Her term would end at the close of yearly meeting sessions 2018.

Global Outreach Learning Tours



The Board of Global Outreach has postponed the two learning tours to Ramallah and another location from spring 2017 to fall 2017.

These international trips are designed for learning about the ministries of NWYM and their local context.  They are designed to provide first-hand cultural and spiritual awareness as you meet and interact with local people. 

These tours also provide opportunities to encourage our Friends Serving Abroad in these places.

Giving Thanks for the Thanksgiving Offering!


Thank you to the many churches who donated funds through the Thanksgiving Offering to benefit Quaker Cove Camp. A total of $13,893.07 has been sent to Quaker Cove to help fund their first new cabin in 50 years.
