Children's Ministry Info
Many churches are preparing for children's and youth ministries to start in the fall.  Here are important details to keep in mind, as churches get ready to host classes, youth group gatherings, and other ministries for children and students.  Every gathering with children or students needs two approved leaders present, at a minimum.  Adults volunteering to work with any ministry, program, or event generally should have attended a Friends Church for at least six months before they will be considered for ministry to/with children, youth, or disabled adults.

Northwest Yearly Meeting requires that local churches and ministries run criminal clearances and track approved abuse prevention training (Ministry Safe) for all primary leaders at local churches and ministries:
  • all paid staff
  • Friends Serving Abroad
  • the presiding clerk
  • the clerk of elders
  • the clerk of trustees
  • all youth and children’s workers
  • people working with vulnerable adults
  • the entire Christian education board
Some churches have found it easiest to host a training together with volunteers and leaders.  Others prefer to manage trainings at an individual level.  Both options are possible.  During the NWYM staff retreat, everyone watched the Ministry Safe training together, allowing for discussion and application for specific contexts.  Please contact Tonya Comfort or Elizabeth Licon at the Yearly Meeting Office with questions or to request trainings for your local church members.
