Advent Reflection
The story is told of a young family feeling added stress on Christmas Eve.  The father felt weighed down by packages and heavier cares.  The mother’s nerves were frazzled, erupting unexpectedly more than once.  Their little daughter seemed to be in the way no matter where she went.  Finally, the parents hurried her up to her bed.  As she knelt to pray, the feverish excitement of the day so mixed her up that the little girl exclaimed, “Dear Jesus, please forgive us our Christmases, as we forgive those who Christmas against us!”

Certainly, Christmas is a fun time of year, filled with music, decorations, presents, special foods, and special times with family and friends – to say nothing of the special Christmas sermons and festive programs in each of our churches!  However, we also know that this beautiful season can grow into a hectic and stressful (if not depressing) time of year when we may be tempted to lose our focus on what is truly important – a time when Christmas almost feels like a transgression or burden, instead of a wonderful blessing!

Jesus came as a baby, not when everything was perfect in society, and not when life moved forward without any problems, worries, stresses or concerns.  The storm winds blew in Bethlehem just as strongly (if not more so) than they do in our own lives, families, churches, businesses, regions, and countries today.  However, from God’s perspective, Christ came at exactly the right moment. “When the set time had fully come,” Paul explained, “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship” (Galatians 4:4-5, NIV, emphasis added).

Christmas reminds us that Christ came into our stresses and messes right when we needed Him most (it was not a “near miss”).  And that He, Emmanuel (God with us), still comes and is still here!  He is with us!  He is with you, right now!  You can trust Him and find rest and peace in Him!

We are thankful for each one of you in our family of Friends Churches in Northwest Yearly Meeting!  During this season, our prayer for you is that you will catch a Fresh Vision of the Christ of Christmas, remembering that He is with you in the midst of any pressures or challenges that come your way!  May you experience a joy-filled celebration of His birth and a hope-filled start to the New Year!

Because of the Christ of Christmas, Your NWYM Staff,
What is happening with the “Budget Challenge?”  Over one year ago at our annual sessions, the Clerk of our Elders, Phil McLain, issued a challenge for 100 additional donors to give $1,000 each to help us fully fund the ministries and vision of NWYM for 2019.  This “Budget Challenge” was intended to be “above and beyond” regular giving to a local church or to the Yearly Meeting.  So far, nearly $43,000 has been given – and we are so thankful – but there is much more to do!  We have not yet met our goal, but we remain in the black through other undesignated gifts and careful holds on spending. As we finish this calendar year, any additional “Budget Challenge” funds will apply to our original budget objectives and help us to take strategic steps forward in ministry and outreach in the months ahead.

Every person is important!  Would you be willing to pray with me about our needs and what the Lord would have you do?  To participate, click here or send a check to NWYM Office, 200 N Meridian St, Newberg, OR 97132, "Attn 2019 Budget Challenge".  Thank you for considering this opportunity to make a significant difference!

May the Lord bless you in this Christmas season and in the New Year!

Because of Christ,
