Derek's Letter to Governor Brown on behalf of the LJDC

June 19, 2015
Governor Jerry Brown
c/o State Capitol, Suite 1173
Sacramento, CA 95814
Dear Governor Brown,
Given the recent news that the former President  of the California Public Utilities Commission, Michael Peevey, met secretly with an executive of Southern California Edison in a hotel in Poland to discuss issues connected to the failed San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant and that many utility customers have lost faith in the integrity of the California Public Utilities Commission, the La Jolla Democratic Club at its May General Membership Meeting unanimously voted to request that you replace the five members of the Public Utilities Commission with five new individuals from diverse backgrounds not related to the utility industry as a way to restore public trust in the commission.
Thank you for your attention in this matter.
Derek Casady, President
La Jolla Democratic Club

News In Verse

By John L. Meyer

Juneteenth + 4th of July
Perhaps it is not too late
On this 4th of July birthday date
To consider all we owe and to congratulate
Those founding fathers and mothers we appreciate.
And to Lincoln, too, for the emancipation proclamation
That some in Texas kept secret so they could continue slavery and hide from recrimination.

Did you miss the June meeting?

Marshall Saunders, founder of Citizens Climate Lobby, explained the creative and inspiring work his group is doing to lobby our federal legislators to get off fossil fuels. He described the meetings his 900 volunteers had with legislators in Washington, D.C. last week-end. You can read about his plan at
John Meyer, club poet, read several poems, including Longfellow’s “Ride of Paul Revere” and his own poem recognizing the People’s Climate Rally with the reenactment of the ride of Paul Revere warning of us the climate catastrophe.
Jose Caballero spoke briefly about his candidacy for councilman from District 7.  He spoke of his commitment to clean elections, water management, better transportation, controls on development, and the development of a river walk.  For more information, go to
Laura Fink, aid to Toni Atkins, introduced herself.  She spoke of Speaker Atkins accomplishments and encouraged members to let her know if there are things they want Atkins to accomplish in the remaining days of her term.
Georgia Crowne reported on the progress of SB 128 which is a bill like that passed in Oregon 20 years ago enabling terminally ill patients to receive medications from their physician to end their life.  It has passed through the CA Senate and is now being considered by committees in the Assembly. Toni Atkins is reported to support the bill.

Raffle - Georgie Crowne generously donated three gifts to raffle off: Roger Brown won a book, Marshall Saunders won a book, and Peter Marto won a bag.
