Are you a female writer? Visual Artist?
Actress? Photographer?
Performance Artist? Filmmaker?
Cultural Worker?

There are those within my immediate family who would call me a trouble-maker, an instigator, or even a provocateur.   I don't subscribe to these ideas.  I do, however, consider myself someone who works to makes things equal for all.  So it should come as no surprise to my friends and colleagues that I have spent some energy and time with my friend, Andrea Nicki, organizing a group of women to start a new organization that will support and promote women in the arts.  There are many, many organizations that offer this type of support in North America and the UK.  There are none in the Pacific Northwest...  until now.

On August 11th, almost thirty women packed into the community space at the Rhizome Cafe until we busted out of the room.  The energy was electric as we brainstormed what was needed and how it could be provided.

On August  23rd, we met again at Kiku Hawkes' studio in Strathcona.  Another thirty-some women showed up: young, old, emerging, established, able-bodies and disabled, filmmakers, writers, visual artists, photographers, mixed media, musicians, sound artists, and sculptors.   The meeting worked on who we were, what we wanted, what was our goals, what might our mission look like, what services might we provide, would we be a collective, a non-profit or a co-operative?  Again the energy was electric and the motivation high.  We are an amazing group of women working collectively toward a common goal.

From the beginning of August when we began sending out notices about the first meeting to the end of August 2011, there were 70+ women who asked to be on our mailing list!  On Sept 6th, a small group will meet to create some drafts of mission statements and goals to bring back to the larger group.  Our next large group meeting is on Sept. 13th at 7 pm.

This organization is for all women everywhere.  Come and be a part of creating a new and exciting group that will support and promote women and their art, their work, and their voices in the Pacific Northwest.  Join Us!
