Welcome Valerie Larkin
Our New Board Member

Valerie Larkin is a long-time bicycle enthusiast, going back to her undergraduate days at the University of Pennsylvania, when a bike racing friend coerced her into riding centuries. She first came to Newport in 1980 to work for the Navy and to attend graduate school at Brown University. After moving around Rhode Island for a number of years, she was very happy to return to Newport in 2015, especially because her new home is less than five miles from her office. Since then she has been a dedicated bicycle commuter. Valerie's particular interest is the integral role that bicycles play in sustainable cities and towns. When not on her bicycle, Valerie enjoys tennis, writing, playing music, and being on the water. Welcome, Valerie!

RIBike Presents Bicycle Thieves
Tuesday March 8th
6:00pm Cable Car Cinema, Providence

Don’t miss the last film in RI Bike’s monthly winter bike film series.  Set in poverty-stricken postwar Rome, Bicycle Thieves is the story of a man on his first day of a new job when his bicycle, which he needs for work, is stolen.  With his young son in tow, he sets off to track down the thief. Enjoy this Academy-Award winning film with fellow cyclists at the awesome Cable Car Cinema and support RIBike in the process.

Middletown Roundabout Is Coming

It's great news that the proposed roundabout at Valley and Aquidneck in Middletown is moving forward - a first for Aquidneck Island. Well-designed roundabouts promise improved flow and improved safety for all road users - motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The article and illustration in the 2/18 edition of Newport This Week and the 2/23 edition of The Newport Daily News did not reference bicycles - so we checked in with Middletown and RIDOT and received assurances that cyclists will be safely accommodated. We'll continue to provide updates. Meanwhile, check out this information from Federal Highway Administration to understand more about the promise of roundabouts.

Bike Rack Progress

New bike racks are coming to: Broadway, Bellevue Avenue and Panera Bread.  Zip Car sponsored racks are in place adjacent to IYRS on Lower Thames. You, can support biking by sponsoring much needed bike parking. Email Mary Ellen to get started.
