"We became a trickle that grew into a river.
We took a flight and drove into the sea, and then we overflowed."
The New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus and Zia Singers, in collaboration with the Rio Rancho Youth Chorus, present the Santa Fe premiere of Grammy Award-winning Christopher Tin’s The Drop That Contained The Sea on Thursday, August 23 at the historic Lensic Theatre in Santa Fe. Under the direction of Aaron Howe, this 10-movement classical crossover work features chorus, orchestra and soloists. Performed in multiple languages, the piece weaves together poems and prayers about water from different cultures. The Drop That Contained The Sea originates from the Sufi concept that, just like every drop of water contains the essence of the sea, so do all humans contain an essence of humanity.
Audience responses from the March Premiere included “This musical performance was truly magnificent and one of the most exciting choral productions I have experienced!”; “It washed over me from the very beginning – it was an experience”; “One of the best EVER!” and “... one of the most moving musical moments I have ever had.”
California-born, British-educated Christopher Tin is a two-time Grammy-winning composer of concert and media music. Time Magazine calls his music “rousing, anthemic” while The Guardian calls it “joyful” and “an intelligent meeting of melody and theme.”.
