"God is not a Christian. God is not a Jew or a Muslim or a Hindu or a Buddhist. I honor my tradition. I walk through my tradition. But I don't believe my tradition defines God. It only points me to God."
— Bishop John Shelby Spong

Jason Crandell does such a great job breaking down essential peak poses. Check out his excellent sequencing tutorial on one of my personal faves: Compass (or Sundial) Pose

Looking for a new read? Check out this collection of essays on Yoga + Body Image. I so admire the editors, Melanie Klein and Anna Guest-Jelley. They're doing really fantastic work.

Nice piece in the NYT the other day on waking up to your patterns — even the little yoga-class habits like always putting your mat in the same spot, or "right foot first" in Surya B. So much of yoga is just waking up to our samskaras, or grooves: those habitual patterns that shape our lives, be they in our work, our relationships, or in the way we always walk the same way to the coffee shop every day. Switch it up.

Hey friends!

Hello from Portland. Hope autumn is treating you wonderfully.

I’ll be back in the Bay Area for a hot minute later this month. Would love to see you.

I'm hosting a quick day-long retreat in Point Reyes on Saturday, October 24th. We’ll hike Bear Valley (a nice tree-lined stroll, perfect for catching autumn colors) and then we’ll head back to YogaToes Studio (MC Yogi and Amanda Giacomini’s home studio) for a 2-hour yoga practice. Come on up early to savor one of the final farmer’s markets of the season. And after? Linger together at one of the many fab local restaurants for vino and oysters and serious comfort food.

Details and registration here.

I'm also happy to announce that I've found a new yoga home here in Portland. Big thanks to the folks at YoYoYogi who've been so warm and welcoming. Please join me at this beautiful studio in the Pearl District for the following regular classes:

Mondays at 7:15pm
Wednesdays at 5:45pm
Saturdays at 8:30am

Finally, I've written a new article. HomeBody: Movement Meets Buddha Nature is published in the October issue of InDance. It's a melding of Buddhism, mindfulness, and modern dance, and is another one dear to my heart.

Sending love from the Pacific Northwest. We're savoring these last few days of brilliant autumn sunshine up here, all too aware that very soon they'll turn to grey. That's the bittersweet blessing of impermanence, eh? Making sure to appreciate the flashes of light and color, realizing we don't get them forever, seasons ever churning.

Wishing you peace and ease and gratuitous amounts of pumpkin spice as October rolls in.

Great little ditty from singer-songwriter Jason Mraz: "How Yoga Saved My Ass." Love his spirit and musicality.
In her new essay Begin Again, Dani Shapiro writes beautifully about yoga, writing, and the power of simple rituals.
