The Habits of Mind in Action
By: Bena Kallick

My trip was filled with wonder and awe!  I visited the Montecito School District in Santa Barbara County where I observed a K-6 school dedicated to thinking and using the Habits of Mind.  A very special treat was an opportunity to watch a group of 2nd grade students see the animation, Thinking Flexibly.  The children were totally engaged as they laughed in just the right places, identified with the situation the characters were struggling with, and had so many examples in the discussion that followed about how they were able to think more flexibly.

After three days totally immersed in the work of the school, I went on to look under the covers (or should I say the green screen) and saw how the animations were made at the WonderGrove Studios.  I met some of the real people behind the voices of the characters and was drawn into the magic of make believe--something I did not find very hard to do.

Terry Thoren, CEO of WonderGrove, is most generous about visitors so, if you ever are in LA, don't miss a visit.  He is also very generous about doing webinars for faculties who are interested in learning more about the power of animation.

We are all so excited about this new work and its potential for starting children at a very young age with a way to become aware of the Habits. And, as you know, habits only grow and deepen over time.  So, why not start early!

Finding Humor: Laughter in Your Lesson Plans
By: Art Costa

Would it be too bizarre to develop a lesson plan the objectives of which are to have your students laugh at least three times? Would it be too ridiculous to state your outcomes as having students not only learn the content but also to find the process of learning joyful, fun and humorous? Might  your students say, “ My teacher makes us laugh?”
