The Institute for Habits of Mind Newsletter

August, 2014

Welcome back to what we hope will be a great school year!

At a time when our children and each of us are challenged by so much happening in our neighborhoods and around the world, The Institute for Habits of Mind provides resources and ideas for students, teachers, and parents to help this year be successful.  Whether you are concerned about focusing, persisting, or thinking flexibly, the well-researched and extensively-used Habits of Mind provide a way to view the world in a sense-making and meaningful manner.
Habits of Mind Animations
Our animation production remains on schedule, our global user base is growing, and feedback on the animations has been exceptional.  All 16 Habits of Mind Instructional Animations and extension lessons will be complete in English and Spanish at the end of October. This week is your last chance to make a purchase as an early adopter before the prices go up on September 1, 2014.

Not sure if you know enough about the animations?  They are a perfect way to transition students back to the classroom after a summer away from school. We invite you to enjoy a sneak preview of three of them right now by clicking on this button. Become part of the Habits of Mind family of users:

Getting Started with Habits of Mind Animations
Art, Bena, and Mort share their thoughts about how to begin using our IHOM Animations.  We encourage teachers and parents to explore the ideas behind each Habit and to use the animations as a way to capture student interest… and to view over the course of the year as children grow and add to their knowledge and experience. Does implementing the Habits of Mind work?
You bet it does!

Dr. Jenny Edwards has synthesized an amazing amount of research to support the effects of the Habits of Mind on students and staffs- elementary, secondary and adult.  It is a "must have" publication for anyone interested in implementing the Habits of Mind in schools and school districts.

"As I read the research behind Costa and Kallick's Habits of Mind, I was amazed at their power!  Studies have been conducted on the Habits of Mind with elementary students, secondary students, and prison inmates.  The research is clear...the Habits of Mind benefit all who use them!"
