Artwork 057 The Power of Pausing

As a Speaker, you should know that The Power of Pausing only works in conjunction with SLOWING DOWN.  So, if you haven’t read last month’s newsletter, please do.  It will make this article many times more valuable.

Clients who successfully implemented SLOWING DOWN contacted me after last month's newsletter to tell me that they constantly needed reminders before they got it.

One really does need to have reminders pasted on walls, foreheads, computer screen, mirrors and more.  It’s interesting how many times I need to remind myself of certain things because I have too much on my mind or I’m in space out mode (just to rest this never-ending chatter in my head).

But truly and really, one of the most important things you can do is SLOW DOWN in your speaking.  (See the last newsletter for the benefits).

And there is one habit that will get you to slow down quicker than any other and that is PAUSING.

Making PAUSING part of your communication will connect you to your audience more deeply.
  • People are more likely to remember ideas when you give them a chance to process your words and resonate with them.
  • People listen if they feel they know who you are.  And when better to get a glimpse of you than in the PAUSE?
  • People remember the important parts of your speech because you emphasized a word, or idea, or image with a PAUSE.
  • People feel relaxed and open with a person who is not rushing all their words together to get to the end.
  • PAUSING allows you to be present in such a way as to LISTEN to your audience and adjust what you are saying and how you are saying it.  And the audience feels important if you pay attention to them.
  • PAUSING allows you to “land” your words with the impact necessary to be remembered.
  • And PAUSING helps to separate the ideas you are bestowing on the audience instead of squeezing them all together into one forgettable mess.

My Search for a New Space Continues

I AM OFFERING a finders fee (to be discussed) or a free month of acting classes ($175.00 value) or speaking coaching ($200/hr); to anyone who can help me find a new studio space.

600 to 800 sq. ft. with an office and access to a bathroom and I'd like to keep it in the SE of Portland.

I am willing to share with someone who does similar work.

I would be using it for acting classes Monday nights and maybe one other day time class as well as monthly Speaking Workshops and one-on-one sessions with clients, as well as special workshops.

Price range $700 to $800 p/month and if sharing (my half).

Please contact me if you see something, know of something, or need further details.

And then there is

Some call it meditation, and others deep breathing and yet others just stare at the clouds for periods of time.  It all ends up contributing mightily to INSIGHT AND INSPIRATION.

Do you ever stop in the middle of the day and close your door, turn off the phone and just stare out the window (if you have one) for a full minute concentrating on the sky, or trees or grass?  Do you have a picture or painting that allows you to leave your mind behind and just drift for a couple of minutes?  Surprise yourself and schedule three or four specific times a day where you journey to these places and see what happens.

I get insights that later seem obvious and easy.  I get inspiration and movement towards an uncluttered path moving to a goal I didn’t know I had or one that I’ve been pursuing.  I get nothing and then everything – not every time.  Sometimes I don’t get anything at all over and over again but eventually something happens that would never happened if I hadn’t PAUSED.

I’m very interested in your experiences with CREATIVE PAUSING.  If nothing else, it will create calm for a few minutes and rest – so essential to fuel the rest of your day in a better way.
