Reflecting on a Great Year, Thanks to Your Support!

2015 was a year of great accomplishments and new endeavors for our farms, customers, and community partners. Our Grower Services program helped 10 farms achieve GAP certification (Good Agricultural Practices), one of the highest industry-recognized standards for food safety. Our distribution network expanded to include even more restaurants, retailers, schools, institutions, and others throughout Charlottesville, Richmond, Washington, D.C., and the Shenandoah Valley.

We launched two new direct-to-consumer programs aimed at increasing food access and healthy eating in our community. Our Fresh Farmacy Program provided
1,350 grocery bags of fresh, local produce to 75 families, and directed $13,200 toward local farmsOur Farm to Workplace Program with Crutchfield Corporation provided 780 grocery bags of fresh, local produce to 78 employees and their families, and directed $11,000 toward local farms. And, schoolchildren across six districts in our area tasted fresh, local foods in the cafeteria and received special visits from farmers during Virginia Farm to School Week
All of this work is possible because of your support. Your commitment to building a healthy and resilient food system is ensuring that farmers receive a fair price for their food, and more members of our community have access to the delicious bounty of our region. More details about the impact of your support can be found in our 2015 Annual Report.

From all of us at Local Food Hub, our partner farms and the families we serve, we wish you a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and happy New Year!

Kid's Menu: Schools Offer Healthier Options

C-ville Weekly recently featured a report on the state of school food in our community, highlighting the many partners working together to develop healthy eating habits among our youth.

"It's 3:30 p.m. on a Tuesday at Jackson-Via Elementary School, and students as young as 5 are biting into fresh Pink Lady apples twice the size of their hands, nodding to one another in approval. They enthusiastically drain small cups of locally pressed apple cider, and several kids raise their hands to ask for a second helping of salad greens. Bags of chips go unnoticed in the corner of the classroom as kids in the after-school program munch contentedly during a presentation by the Local Food Hub about fresh fruits and vegetables..." Bama Works Grant to Support Fresh Farmacy

Local Food Hub is honored to receive a grant from the Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band to support our Fresh Farmacy: Fruit and Veggie Prescription Program. The funds will be used towards operating our second year of this program, which has already provided thousands of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to area health clinic patients and their families.

"The Dave Matthews Band deeply understands the unique needs and opportunities of this community, and we are grateful for their partnership," said Kristen Suokko, Executive Director of Local Food Hub. "With their support, our local food system is more robust than ever before: small farms are thriving, and more people have access to fresh, nutritious local food." You can read more about the grant award here

Local Food Hub is a nonprofit organization that partners with Virginia farmers to increase community access to local food. After six years, we're still a thriving distribution network for local food, but we are also so much more: a leader in the farm to school movement, a donor to regional food banks, a guide for businesses, a resource for farmers, and a catalyst for fresh ideas for how our community feeds itself.

Join us in our efforts of providing access to farm sourced food for everyone.
