Mother Nature was especially tough on Virginia farmers this year. The 2016 growing season began with a late frost, killing or damaging many crops, followed by a month of rain, which prevented the planting of many crops and rotted the ones that were planted, followed by extreme heat and a very warm fall. Despite the challenges small farms face, the support from our community enables us to stand by our partner farms. That means helping them find alternative crops to offset their unexpected loss, committing to purchase what they are able to grow, and distributing their harvest to those who need it most in our community.
Now more than ever, your investment in Local Food Hub is critical to strengthening our local economy, environment, and public health. In the coming year, we’ll continue to increase access to fresh, nutritious food by building on educational services for our partner farms and working with more health clinics, schools, institutions, and community organizations. If these things are important to you, help us do more in the coming year by making a gift today.
