24 Track Analogue Tape Recording

At Air-Edel we love the sound of analogue. We pride ourselves on making full use of our lovely Cadac desk with its fantastic pre-amps and EQs, stacks of outboard compressors and vintage plate reverbs. Many of our clients share this same aesthetic. 
 

Some of you who’ve been here in recent weeks may have noticed that our beloved Otari MTR-100A 24 track analogue tape machine has been missing from its usual place in our machine room. 

We’ve had our 2 inch machine completely overhauled by specialist audio engineer Paul Leader, who has restored it as closely as possible to its original factory specification. The entire headblock has been replaced, the transport improved and all tracks thoroughly tried and tested to ensure that this tape machine is back to being the pinnacle of analogue sound quality. 

This machine truly is an incredible piece of engineering. Although its predecessor, the MTR-90, was a workhorse found in hundreds of studios around the world, the MTR-100A is digitally controlled and features fully automated alignment of all record and reproduce parameters. Our machine also has optional Dolby noise reduction built in on all tracks.

Sadly many tape machines have disappeared from professional studios having been superseded by digital recording platforms and DAWs, but some facilities managed to keep their tape heritage alive. We’re glad to be a part of a growing trend amongst musicians, composers, songwriters and producers who are leaning back towards authentic, analogue recording that fully embraces the undeniably unique sound that only tape can provide.

And of course, couple the MTR-100A with our fully spec’d 32 analogue input Pro Tools HDX rig and you can combine the sound and inspiration of tape with the speed and flexibility of the digital domain. So it’s no problem to track your rhythm section to tape and then move quickly and easily into Pro Tools to take advantage of the benefits that modern recording can deliver.
