Before I dive into today's thrilling topic, I want to say a quick thing. My weekly email hasn't gone out in several weeks. Maybe you noticed; maybe you didn't. It's OK, I know you're busy too. Life has been busy: hubby gone often for work, homeschooling kids, sickness, new puppy (fun and so much work!) and more. But friends, I've missed writing to you! Like I love talking to you all. Anyway, on to today's topic... 😘

Branding is...kinda confusing, honestly. Throw out a call to define branding in a Facebook group and you'll get a ton of different answers. Ask the same question in another group, and you'll get even more.

Let's dig in a moment, go old school, and consult the dictionary. Well, sort of old school. I don't actually own a general dictionary anymore. But the online version of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word brand this way:

brand (noun) \ ˈbrand \

  • a mark made by burning with a hot iron to attest manufacture or quality or to designate ownership
  • a printed mark made for similar purposes
  • class of goods identified by name as the product of a single firm or manufacturer
  • a characteristic or distinctive kind example- ****a lively brand of theater
  • a public image, reputation, or identity conceived of as something to be marketed or promoted

brand (verb) branded; branding; brands

  • to mark with a brand
  • to impress indelibly example- brand the lesson on his mind

Even the dictionary definition is long and nuanced. I've bolded a few things that stand out. At the end of the day, branding means something different for you than it does for Target. Because it's more about you as an individual. While Target's branding might persuade me to roam the aisles for things I don't really need, it doesn't connect me to a person.

But your brand should connect me to you. Because you aren't some big company with tons of employees. You're the driving force behind your biz. Even if you aren't a solopreneur. And that's why your branding should start with discovering more about you. That's why I care about your personality type.
