HAPPY SPRING FROM EU INSURANCE
The time rolls on this year and there are still no signs of the Covid Virus disappearing, like most I suppose most of us at the end of last year thought that by Easter 2021 we all may be in better position with the virus and that travel corridors may be open for a much needed boost to our travel industry.  Who knows how it will affect the world if travel is restricted over the summer for 2021.

Also when can we travel to visit our families?  For me personally this has been the worst situation as having a new grandson last year and not visiting my daughters and grandchildren has been both frustrating and upsetting.  I am sure I am not alone as I speak to many of my clients in the same situation.   However as long as we stay well , safe and virus free, sometime in the future we will be able to meet up with our loved ones.   Most clients I speak to feel that their life is on hold and they are constantly waiting each and every day for positive news….

So another year goes by, it seems incredible that over a year ago we went into lockdown.  Have to say I am grateful that we have our shops, bars, restaurants, beauty centres, hairdressers etc all open for business, even at the  restricted times allowed.

We at EU Insurance Direct have been exceptionally busy even throughout these troubled times.  The problems experienced with travel restrictions does mean that for the clients with holiday homes haven’t been able to get over to Spain so we have been able to lower the levels of cover and offer split payments without loading.   In Spain we do not have SORN so if you own a car, it has to have at least the minimum insurance on it to be legal.  For many to insure a car that has been sitting idle for the last year does seem a waste of money but this is the law here and fines are being levied for uninsured vehicles.  The database in Spain does flag up when a car isn’t reinsured as all insurers have a requirement to send this information to Trafico.

Lets hope that come the Summer we will have seen many more of the population vaccinated which will allow some travel to proceed.

Anyway enough of doom and gloom.  I have to applaud all the new businesses that have sprung up on the coast within the last few months, how amazing that people still have some confidence in the economy and most appear to be doing very well.
EXTRA ORDINARY DAMAGE AND NATURAL PHENOMENA – COVERED RISKS IN SPAIN
Damage coverage for vehicles with English Plates insured in Spain are not covered by the Consortium (the Government based scheme for extra ordinary phenomena) in fact UK policies do not pay any fee to the Consortium, it is only available for Spanish Registered vehicles.    These risks however are covered (with the corresponding excess) under the insurance policy.

Please note however that English Plates are ONLY covered for metrological damage if the cover taken out  is with fire and theft and/or fully comprehensive.  Any basic 3rd party insurance on UK plates is not covered at all.

BREXIT AND LIBERTY SEGUROS
Once again we confirm that Liberty have confirmed that they will still have an agreement with the UK to insure UK registered cars in Spain.  If this changes we will let you know.

INSURANCE FOR VAN/LORRIES?
Please be aware that we are getting more and more enquiries for vans and motorhomes which are over our remit to offer cover.   We are unable to cover any vehicle over 3.5 ton.

We have a chance to possibly insure Spanish plates vans or motorhomes over this weight but not English.   We do not have an agreement with the DVLA for Liberty to insure any vehicle above 3.5 ton.

SELLING YOUR SPANISH CAR?
It is so important if you sell your Spanish car that you do it legally and make sure the car is taken out of your name into the new owner.  We have found a good few problems where clients have allowed the new owner to take over their insurance (as most policies we offer are for any driver over a certain age etc as long as the policyholder gives permission to drive), however in the event of an accident this can cause major problems.   Recently this has happened to a client of ours that let the new owner drive under his insurance and had an accident.  Firstly we were not informed that the car had been sold…  secondly we had no contact details of the new owner so when he called us to open a claim we had no knowledge he existed.  Unfortunately also the previous owner has returned to the UK and we have no forwarding details.  This provides us with many problems.  So even if you intend to move back to the UK the ownership of any vehicle has to be changed.

THIS WAS SENT LAST MONTH BUT WANTED TO REMIND EVERYONE.....I WANTED TO GIVE YOU A CLIENTS EXPERIENCE OF REGISTERING WITH THE LOCAL HEALTH CENTRE..

Vaccines for all ????

Just a quick bit of feedback about healthcare/vaccination registration at the health centre at the side of the Las Chapas ayuntamiento building just down the road from you:
  1. Until very recently they refused point blank to accept any registrations from non-EU nationals.  We were told we needed to go back to our own countries to get the vaccine (and not in a very nice way either!).
  2. I showed them a press statement from the Marbella alcaldesa last week and after some discussion they have now agreed to accept registrations.
  3. You need to take your passport, passport photocopy and recent empadronamiento certificate (less than 3 months).  They also insisted that I produce a copy of my old European Health Card (even though these have been discontinued now as far as I know).  They did not ask for a NIE copy.
  4. Registration is done on the spot.  You receive a flimsy piece of paper saying that you are registered in the systema sanitario publico de Andalucia database.
  5. They also take your phone number and this is printed on the paper you receive.
  6. They won´t register children - they say you need to go to the social services office in Marbella for that.

Firstly, be assured that the Spanish government has emphasized that no distinction will be made between citizens and non-citizens and has pledged to vaccinate everyone in the country, regardless of their legal status and that includes those not registered within social security system including ‘illegal' immigrants and the homeless.

"All those living in Spain will be able to receive the vaccination against the virus as the campaign unrolls. Vaccination is universal, it includes all people," insisted a Health Ministry spokesman.

So how will they find you?
We don’t have full information yet on how the people will be called up to be vaccinated but it will be organised by the regional health authority where you live.  It appears that the appointments will be made by phone however.    Those living in Spain have been advised to contact their local health centre to register regardless of whether they are entitled to free health care or have private health insurance.

Before you do just drop in, it is advised to call ahead as some health care centres require an appointment.

You should provide the following information:
  1. Your passport (bring a copy just in case)
  2. Your residence card (green certificate if EU member or TIE if third country national). If you have one.
  3. “Certificado de empadronamiento” (registration with the Town Hall) which is no older than three months.
  4. In the case of minors, you should bring their documents and birth certificates as well. Children do not need to be present.
Keep checking the health authority announcements online in the region where you are living as each regional government will be responsible for administering the programme in their community.

CHANGE OF RATES ELECTRICITY SUPPLIERS
As many of you may know I support Evergreen Electrica and Nordic Energy for their competitive rates and customer service and bills in English.   Now is a good time to perhaps check your own bills to see if you think you are being overcharged?  However there has been some increases in all electricity tariffs as information given below from Phil at Evergreen Electrica

Just to keep you up to date, the electricity industry will be going through some changes in the coming months.  Originally 01/04/2020 was the date but, due to Covid, this was put back to 01/04/2021.  We have now been informed by the government it won´t come in until 01/06/2021, but it will happen!

We are waiting on the full details to be confirmed but in general the changes are;

Potencia (Contracted power) will be charged differently in different time zones.  Generally this should work out cheaper for the clients but we are waiting for the rates.
  • Consumption for a small consumer (2.0 & 2.1 tariffs with potencia lower than 15KW) will be split into 3 time zones (peak, medium & off-peak).  So if a client has a standard 24hr tariff at present, they will move automatically to this new 3 time zone tariff.  If clients are on the dual tariff at present (often referred to as Day/Night) they will also automatically moved to the new 3 time zone tariff.
  • There are more changes for the larger consumers who basically will go from 3 time zones to 6.

We will obviously let all our customers know a little closer to the time and when everything has been 100% clarified.  For now the message is simple, there will be changes for all customers of all suppliers in the coming months with the proposed date of 01/06.   Social media has been awash with rumours etc but we want to wait until everything is clarified before announcing anything.  I will of course let you know when everything has been confirmed.
