July brings us to the close of the first six months of our new project, Exploring the Future of Parenting Education. We are engaging the citizens of Waterloo Region in a dialogue about parenting education. Parenting is a life long journey—we don’t always know where we’re heading or how we’ll get there, but we’re certainly learning every step of the way. HOW people want to make that learning happen is what we want to know. From a “design thinking” perspective, we ask people to share with us how they learn their parenting skills or how they gain information about parenting. Then we ask them to imagine, in an ideal world (with no barriers or constraints) how they would most like to learn this. We invite people to explore—and imagine—the future of parenting education.

We are in the “engagement” phase of the project and continue to seek input from the parents, future parents and caring adults in our region.

In the fall, we will be hosting a large-scale parenting event, which will include a presentation from a local parenting expert as well as opportunities for people to continue to contribute to this important project. Stay tuned for more information!

To date, we have hosted 12 “Stakeholder Labs”, with a total of 95 participants. These labs, which are similar to focus groups (but way more fun), allow us to explore participants’ experiences of parenting, understand what contributes to their parenting skills and knowledge, and learn how they want to continue their learning as parents. The conversations have been incredible and the “output” is detailed, poignant and inspiring.
We are also engaging with people through a brief, interactive survey at community events and public spaces. You may have sen us at St. Jacobs Market and the KW Multicultural Festival and we will be at other events throughout the summer. With the survey, we are again asking people how they want to learn about parenting. As it only takes about 10 minutes to complete, we are hoping to reach a wide range of citizens.
We were honoured to be one of the charitable partners for the Cowan Charity Classic on June 15th.

The Cowan Insurance Group and the Cowan Foundation hosted an amazing event at the Deer Ridge Golf Club and the funds raised will support our Walk In Counselling Clinic.

Our deepest thanks to everyone at Cowan, the sponsors, golfers and volunteers who made this event possible.
