1:00 - 2:00 PM | Sunday, April 14th, 2019
Join Executive Director and local chef, Ian Lai, on the basics of building a pantry. Building a well-stocked pantry will help you easily prepare healthy and tasty meals, without having to run to the grocery store. Buying in bulk saves you money and time. Having dried and canned goods in your pantry will help you align with the new Canada's Food Guide, of cooking more and eating more plant-based proteins, which usually can come off your shelf.

We'll be going over the regulations of the community gardens, and how to get the most out of your garden plot. This session is for new gardeners, but if you have been with us for a season or more and want to learn more about gardening in Richmond, please feel free to join! Ask our Urban Agriculture Program Coordinator, Sarina, all your garden questions and feel confident starting your growing season.

Community Garden Renewal Update:

We had a successful renewal period, even with all our technical difficulties. We sincerely appreciate your patience for those who the online renewal did not work. We are working towards a smoother system for next year.

We already have 15 new gardeners, and more to come as plots are being re-allocated. If you see a new gardener, say hello and welcome them to the gardens!

Get your Coffee grounds!

We are partnering with Sanctuary Cafe at the South end of No 2 Road to provide gardeners with used coffee grounds. Call ahead, and ask the staff if there are any coffee grounds available.

Coffee grounds make a great addition to the garden as a mulch, when mixed with other organic matter, or as a fertilizer, as coffee contains the important nutrient, Nitrogen. Sprinkle a little on top of your soil and mix it in. Be careful about using around seedlings, as it can clump and prevent seeds from rooting. Used coffee grounds are not overly acidic, so don't worry about your soil's pH.

You can find Sanctuary Cafe at:

Richmond Community Seed Library

Thank you to all that came out to our Seedy Saturday event on March 2nd, either as a volunteer, vendor, or visitor. It was a great day of all things seeds, gardening, and planting. We had two great talks and many wonderful vendors. We are already planning next year's Seedy Saturday, so if you couldn't make it out this year, watch out for it March 2020!
