Politics of austerity: historic mobilisation of Spanish orchestras

In a huge concert bringing together 23 orchestras, Spanish musicians intend to protest against the drastic reductions in orchestra members and the increase in VAT on cultural services from 8 to 21%.

At 7 pm (CEST) on the 23 September, over 1,000 musicians will, in 16 different cities, be simultaneously proposing the same symphony programme.

Organised by the AMPOS association and AIE collecting society, this event continues and extends the protest movement in the music sector in face of the radical austerity measures affecting numerous orchestras in the country and jeopardizing the national cultural backdrop.

Athens. A musician stabbed to death in the street by a Golden Dawn militant

On Wednesday 18 September in Athens, 34-year old Greek musician Pavlos Fyssas (better known under his stage name Killah P) died from stab-wounds after being attacked by an extreme right-wing militant. The artist had been caught up in a violent brawl involving in particular twenty or so fascist militants. The murderer has been identified as a member of the Golden Dawn party.

A hip-hop and rapper artist, Pavlos Fyssas was a member of a small, left-wing party: Antarsya. He customarily took part in anti-fascist concerts and was engaged in benevolent activities in his district.
