TRAILBLAZERS

Alpine Canada Alumni Newsletter
Dear alumni:

Each month, I set out to compile the Pioneers’ newsletter with uncertainties about exactly how much content I’ll have to share. Time and time again, I receive wonderful content from you and before I know it, the page fills up with many great updates! These news are a constant reminder of our community’s richness and broad reach. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this and past issues. Please keep the info coming!

As April nears and as the bittersweet end to the season approaches, our athletes remain focused on final para World Cup races taking place this weekend as well as National Championships getting underway very soon. Nationals are important events for our ski racing system and I’m sure you have your own nostalgic memories (good and bad!) of closing the season at those races!

Make sure to read all the way to the bottom as we invite our alumni community to join in the Nationals festivities!

I look forward to reconnecting with you in April with our 2018-2019 season wrap up!

Happy trails!

ANNUAL ALUMNI INSPIRATION DAY AT GEORGIAN PEAKS
By Karen Stemmle

Georgian Peaks is a special place and once a year, we have 13 of us from the CAST Alumni Group who get together to inspire the next generation of little champions. We have an official alumni ski day with the kids where we ski with the kids and tell stories.

Here is the photo from this winter!

I’ve been heading up the group for the past four years. Liisa did it before me & before that it was Angela.

Present this year: John Mealey, Angela Gougeon, Todd Brooker, Mark Kinoshita (‘95/‘96 Cdn Telemark Team), Michael Lambert (Newest member at Peaks - Snowboard Alpine), me, Tyler Nella & brother Brian!

Edi Podivinsky would have been there but he broke his foot playing ball hockey a few weeks ago.

Members of the Georgian Peaks Alumni Group also include: Lisa Savijarvi, Jim Kirby, Larissa Yurkiw, and Greg Grossmann.

QUICK UPDATE FROM DON LYON
Involved in Canadian ski racing as a coach for the last 50 years
I’m living in Ottawa with my wife Jacqueline Rouvier. Jackie is from France and is the bronze medalist in GS from the 1974 World Championships.

I have three children: a daughter living in Australia with her two children and two boys living near me with their three children.

Every month of March, Jackie and I go to France (at Notre-Dame-de-Bellcombe which is about 13 kilometres from Mégève) to enjoy skiing under the sun. We go back in the summer for another three months.

When I’m not taking my grand-children out to ski at Mont Cascades, I help one of my sons with his contracting business. I can pretty much do all the handy work. I just got done three days of drywalling!

Jackie and I still follow ski racing a lot, getting up early in the morning to catch the second runs of World Cup races!

I think the secret to my 50 years of coaching in ski racing has been my strong desire to get athletes to trust and believe in themselves. At a more technical level, I think what distinguished me as a coach was my natural ability to read terrain and set courses accordingly. I still have very fond memories of setting the first ever women’s World Cup Super G course along with fellow Swiss coach. Laurie Graham won that race and Gerry Sorensen won the downhill along with many other athletes in the top 10 which made the weekend extra special!
