Dear <<First Name>>,

Mrs Galaxy Australia finalist has her say on pageants

by Marie Pietersz

Archana Seliyan, winner, Mrs Sri Lanka Australia 2016 (NSW)

Fathima Zareen, finalist Mrs Sri Lanka Australia 2016

The Miss Sri Lanka Australia pageant has nominated two of its 2016 contestants to participate in the Mrs Galaxy Australia 2017 contest to be held at the Gold Coast, Queensland, on 28 March. Participation in this national contest will provide our Sri Lankan community representatives with exposure at the national level and experience in competing against the wider Australian community.

Mrs Sri Lanka NSW 2016, Archana Seliyan, and finalist Fathima Zareen, will vie for the title of Mrs Galaxy Australia at the national finals.

Archana and Fathima have raised funds for Make a Wish Foundation and participated in many public and community events, a requirement for contestants of the Galaxy contest. Archana’s primary sponsor is clothing label NAATH and her secondary sponsor is Sri Lankan bridal label SAVISH. Fathima has also been sponsored by SAVISH.

Based on her experience in the two contests, Fathima provides her views on what participating in pageantry means and her ‘take’ on the perfect score of ’10’, adding to other views from contestants and critics around the world on this rating. Fathima says of some of the myths:

“Critics of beauty pageants argue that such contests reinforce the idea that young women should be valued primarily for their physical appearance and this puts tremendous pressure on females. However, as a finalist in the Miss Sri Lanka Australia and Miss Galaxy Australia contests, I have a completely different outlook on the subject.

“In response to critics, both Miss Sri Lanka Australia and Miss Galaxy Australia contests created platforms which allowed me to break down my barriers of fear. They helped me to create life-long friendships with fellow contestants and gave me the opportunity to be an active member of the community through the use of my title.

“Both these contests not just rewarded my youth and beauty, but actually opened up doors for a ‘better me’ and created a platform to stand up for what I believe in.
“As some of my feminist friends say, ‘Beauty pageants are a space where women get objectified and sexualised’. However, what they forget is there is always another side of the coin they refuse to see.
“Miss Sri Lanka Australia and Miss Galaxy Australia celebrate and empower young women to be who they are. They open up a stage where females can walk with pride and focus on creating independent individuals who can lead in society.
“As a final note, there are always two sides to the same coin and our responsibility is to critically reflect which side is best for us.”

Congratulations and good luck wishes to our two entrants who will represent the Sri Lankan community in the national finals for the Mrs Galaxy Australia category title. Winners of the national titles will compete in the 2017 International Galaxy Pageant to be held in July in Florida, USA.

Memories are made of this- A tribute to the Colombo Music Scene of the 60’s

Compiled by; Prins James Alagaratnam- Toronto

The recent passing of Stanley Arnold, member of “The Four Chords” singing group of the sixties, prompted reminiscent memories, imbibed over quite a bit of red with friends from the same period of time. We travelled back, remembering the Colombo Music Scene of the 60’s and the artists, and promoters responsible for bringing great entertainment to Colombo and the suburbs, at a time devoid of Television in Sri Lanka, where the only entertainment available were live shows, events or the radio

Stanley of course never stopped singing. Colombo audiences will recollect the renditions of “Little Eyes I love you” and “Cha Boom” delivered at their many appearances. Even though the Four Chords disbanded Victor Gamalathge continued performing duets with his wife as “Christine and Victor” and subsequently emigrating to Australia. Stanley immigrated to Toronto, Canada and continued singing in his church choir and for a little while sang with my brother Steve, myself and friends, starting off the Monks “R “Us singing group.

Some Recollections and Reflections

by Palitha Manchanayake

Dear All,

I have written this book “Some Recollections and Reflections”, and it is not an auto-biography, but a collection of interesting episodes which I have encountered as an Irrigation Engineer/Hydrologist, or to be more correct as a human being, in the past 68 years.

It reveals more or less my life story.

I have attached a Book Review written by Daya De Silva which has come up in Pahana Magazine February 2017 Issue.

The Book Launch is on the 18th March 2017 at West Pennant Hills Valley Community Centre, 42 Hill Road, West Pennant Hills at 1.45 pm.

You are most cordially invited to attend this function.

(Please note that there are no individual invitations).

I hope you could make it on that day.

With Warm Regards
Palitha

“HOW NOW, CROWN, MACAU”?

by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka!

The latest is China, to be exact, Macau”.
Many other Countries have the same idea now
“Gambling is illegal”, says the Govt., with a frown
“Lanka has objected, they want “No Packer or Crown”

Firstly, GAMBLING, in any way, shape or form is.just another stupid habit, to say the least. It has been proven many times that, without the slightest doubt, the “odds” are ALWAYS heavily stacked against the “gambler”, and why people who have worked hard and long to earn the little money they have, would want to “give it away” at a card-table or money-hungry poker machine, is something I could never understand.

If, perchance, they “come-away” with a few extra dollars in their pockets, which happens from time to “seldom-time”, it seems that this gives them the incentive to go back to their habit, give back everything they won, plus more. Another “addiction”, unfortunately, but still, a very strong one, indeed.

Then, we have those who are termed “high-rollers”.

********************

Ingredients

1    Sprig    Curry Leaves (Optional)
1        Egg (To brush the pastry before baking, if you
        bake them)
500g    Prawns, uncooked
1    Packet    Shredded Pastry
        For the Marinade
1    Tblsp    Asian Cooking Wine (Optional)
1    Tblsp    Chilli flakes (Optional)
1    Tblsp    Fish Sauce
        Salt & Pepper to taste
1    Tblsp    Soya Sauce

Preparation

Prepare the Shredded Pastry for use according to the directions on the packet. Wash prawns lightly and then marinate them for 30 to 60 minutes. You could use raw prawns, but, they have to be deveined before washing. Suggest you do not use cooked prawns.

Break a small piece of the Pastry and wrap each prawn in it. Do this until you have used the required number of prawns. You could either deep fry the wrapped prawns and leave aside to drip and dry on a bed of paper towels, or bake them in a lined tray in a medium heat oven.

They are quite good as a `Savoury' when having cocktails, or on their own. Enjoy.
