Black Betty by 1961 now serving in Canterbury…

Story and pictures by Marie Pietersz

You can now indulge your caffeine hit and stimulate your senses at the same time at Black Betty’s coffee house, among the exotic foliage and blooms of Scintilla Flowers, in the beautiful precinct of Canterbury’s grand old charm.

Black Betty is the entrepreneurial venture of co-owners Ash and Shiroma Nathan and Glen and Simonne Couthino, opening its doors for business on 10 February at 180 Canterbury Road. Nestled among the tranquil leafy glades of Melbourne’s east, Black Betty is the place to visit if you are looking for a coffee experience with a difference, with extras to boot.

Desmond, Mariazelle and Indrani take Melburnians on a musical journey back in time

Sinhala Pop is unparalleled in the Sri Lankan music scene and although centered mostly among its natives whose clamor for the true- to- life meaning the lyrics bring, it endears through generations of music lovers thanks to the creators of this genre aimed at a particular audience.

With it comes to mind the composers and singers who make popular those memorable melodies and if there was a pecking order about who were on top of that tree, names such as Desmond De Silva, Mariazelle Goonetilleke and Indrani Perera, (the latter of Three sisters fame), are never far from the cream of Sinhala pop. The list of superstars in this category are too numerous to mention.

In that context, it was a fascinating experience for me, (admittedly, not the traditional Sinhala pop fan), to find myself and wife Anne taking in a musical concert at the George Woods Performing Arts Centre in Ringwood, Melbourne featuring the trio I have mentioned earlier and the experience was enjoyable as it was fulfilling much to our surprise.

by Desmond Kelly “the Star of eLanka!”

At last, akin to the Earth’s Atmosphere, the “Cold Wars”” like everything else, are getting “warmer” with each passing day. Rhetoric is fine, damned diplomatic solutions are possible only when there are “dinkum bloody diplomats” to solve all the complex situations around the Earth at the moment. Everywhere one looks, there are “WARS” being Waged, Innocents & children being Indiscriminately killed, limbs being smashed to smithereens by landmines, starvation, homelessness, refugees in their thousands, simply trying to re-livel their lives in a foreign Country after being kicked out of their own, a sad World indeed. Things couldn’t get much worse. We thought “Adolph” was bad. but he pales into insignificence beside all these so-called despots. Irresponsible World leaders who are now flaunting Nuclear Missles, Suicide Bombers who are killing themselves as they kill others, Terrorists trying  their best to terrorize anyone who doesn’t agree with their “terror-tactics” The 20th Century was bad, the 21st, so far, worse, so where does it go to from there? .

Not many people are aware of the danger of cooking in Aluminium vessels – by Dr Hector Perera – London

Mainly in Western countries, in baking fish, roasting vegetables or preparing a piece of meat for dinner or even for baking cakes, they use aluminium foil. What you may not realise is that some of the foil will leach into your meal – and this could be bad for your health.

“Gamae Kadae”
Back home in Sri Lanka as well they use aluminium but not as much as in other countries. In Sri Lanka they make delicacies like “haelapa, wandu appa, pol roti” with vegetable leaves such as plantain leaves and with “kenda kola”. Those who know the taste of those delicacies know exactly what I mean. In some restaurants as well they serve some food on banana leaves for example “Thosae and wadae” are served on them with coconut sambol and gravy. No one complained about the health effects on eating and cooking on such leaves. One might not come across such village type of food in the city but if you drive off the main road to some village area to see those things in “gamae kadae”.

Diyatalawa: The Watered Valley

A note from Des Kelly re: the article:
Also known as the beautiful “Watered Valley” of Ceylon, as I knew “her”, was the place where, together with “my batch” of Royal Ceylon Navy “recruits”, we came, to be turned from “boys into men”, way back in the 1950’s. Diyatalawa & our “training camp” H.M.Cy.S.

Rangala” is just another place in “My lovely Island Home” that I will never ever forget simply because it was here that, difficult, though it was, we were all taught to “adapt” to anything that life, in general, had to offer, & this is exactly what I have done for 81 years to date.

A much more comprehensive “account” of my “time” in the Navy follows in “Four-Score & Forward”, hopefully an interesting look at the life of this writer, once again, written especially for my family, friends & fans & presented by eLanka (another brand new Era of digital technology) ,wherein my friend Neil Jayasekera has seen fit to “publish” the “memories”this R.Cy.N Supply Assistant in the foremost “website” for Lankans & Lankan/Aussies everywhere, and, in which, I am not only appreciative, but proud to be part of.

This particular “article” is a “must read” for anyone claiming to be Ceylonese or Sri Lankan. It is the most interesting “piece”(complete with pictures) , of this beautiful Valley and, together with eLanka & later on, hopefully “The Lanka Times”, This was sent to me by another good friend, Victor Melder, via Keith Bennett.

Thank you Victor & Keith for a most wonderful “look” at “Diyatalawa, the Watered Valley” Great “story” boys & wonderful memories. Desmond Kelly.
