“AIYOH, VAYA -CON – DIOS”

by Desmond Kelly – ‘the Star of eLanka”

“What to do,men? (aiyoh), Vaya (go) Con (with) Dios( God), Possibly, a good way of starting the New Year of 2018, telling the “rocket-man” where to go, if he keeps on firing his “fireworks”, but, much more importantly, for all my favourite readers of what will be the “Premier” Website for all Lankan/Aussies everywhere, (we are already in the “top 50” & have a medal to prove it), let me “put-it” another way.

How to prevent a hang-over after heavy drinking
Health Education for Sri Lankans & others by Dr Harold Gunatillake
The hang over symptoms after a heavy binge the night before are: – headache, dry tongue and mouth, nausea and vomiting, running to the toilet and dizziness, among others.

Every sip of alcohol you consume is absorbed immediately into the blood stream through the stomach lining, and the rest through the small gut. Your body cells being permeable, alcohol will diffuse into your tissues.

Queen Elizabeth II visits Sri Lanka
Queen Elizabeth II was only 25 years old when she was appointed to the throne. The Queen has ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, becoming a much loved and respected figure across the globe. She came to the throne 65 years ago on February 6, 1952.

SRI LANKA NEWS IN BRIEF

Compiled by Victor Melder

Gale force winds accompanied by torrential rains which lashed most parts of the country especially the Southern Province and the central hills on Wednesday caused havoc, leaving seven persons dead and hundreds of others homeless. The seven deaths were reported from Badulla, Galle, Wattala and Kiribathgoda, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC). Meanwhile, several fishing boats have gone missing in the South. It is reported that the fishermen of Dodanduwa and Tangalle have been affected due to adverse weather conditions that prevailed in the area. Three fishing vessels that sailed from Dodanduwa have gone missing. However, all the fishermen in those vessels, except one have made it to the shore safely. It was reported that Galle, Matara and Ambalangoda were the worst hit areas with many power outages.

BOTH SIDES OF GOODBYE

by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’

This would have to be one of the “best” titles, especially for a “Country Song”. This is also another “tid-bit” for thousands of eLanka readers, on line. Although “Country” is my forte, my tastes in music are “catholic”. We, @ eLanka, do not “present” these little “articles” for any financial gain whatsoever. “Musical Genres” differ vastly, I take nothing away from the fact that modern Music & Artistes make lots of money & good luck to them. However, the fact remains, that as far as I am concerned, a “song”, in the true meaning of the word, is a “condensed-story”.

A century’s fruition

The centenary that the Ceylon Daily News celebrates this year is also a hundred years where this newspaper, newspapers in Sri Lanka and indeed the media, in general, have metamorphosed several times over, serving different roles depending on the needs of the day.

A hundred years ago, in 1917, the Ceylon Daily News was born when Don Richard Wijewardene (known as ‘DR’ to all), took ownership of The Ceylonese and re-christened it the Ceylon Daily News. Wijewardene was involved in the movement to gain Independence from Britain and was not shy to use his newspaper for that purpose. In that sense, the Ceylon Daily News had an enmeshed roe in the country’s politics from its very inception.
