WINES FOR CHILLING, GRILLING, OR HIKING!
Armas de Guerra Rosado Mencía Bierzo DO 2014
Country: SPAIN / Region: CASTILLA Y LEÓN / Appellation: BIERZO DO / Varietal(s): MENCÍA --- Fifteen or twenty years ago, wine cooperatives were bad words in terms of quality wine. Co-ops back then, and some still today, simply blended all the grapes produced by the members of the co-op despite the quality. Not so today as entrepreneurial importers are finding more co-ops working to produce quality over quantity. Here is a case in point from Olé Imports. Viños Guerra is a co-op focusing their efforts on great wines, and this rosé is no exception! Made from organically grown dry-farmed mencía grapes, this light, dry rosé has notes of pink grapefruit, white pepper, and currant, with a touch of savory character. Zesty acidity and minerals on the finish make this perfect with pasta or rice salads, grilled fish, raw or lightly-cooked shellfish, or goat cheeses. Or kick back and enjoy it on its own after an afternoon of gardening!

Azienda Agricola Monte Bernardi Sangiovese "Fuori Strada - Off Road" Toscana IGP 2013 - ORGANICALLY GROWN - LITER
Country: ITALY / Region: TUSCANY / Appellation: TOSCANA IGP / Varietal(s): SANGIOVESE --- Just in time for the summer camping season, this very popular red in a convenient liter box is back! The wine is the work of American Michael Schmelzer, who planted vineyards in 2005. From the outset, he worked the vineyards biodynamically, following the principles of Rudolf Steiner. Schmelzer was concerned about building the vineyards “from the ground up”. Strong vines and healthy soil could only produce better quality fruit. The name means “off road” and the grapes for this wine come from the Monte Bernardi estate, in the Chianti Classico area, one of the prime and most historic areas for sangiovese. Schmelzer has managed to extract all the elegance of the varietal; keeping it away from oak, the expression offers great sangiovese purity. The wine is bright with loads of cherry and red fruit with a lasting freshness on the palate. Certainly perfect for all sorts of picnic fare, this will also work with simple red sauce pastas and grains with grilled vegetables.

Emilio Lustau Manzanilla Jerez DO "Papirusa" NV
Country: SPAIN / Region: ANDALUSIA / Appellation: JEREZ DO / Varietal(s): PALOMINO FINO --- Manzanilla Papirusa is part of the Solera Reserve range from Bodegas Lustau
, which features wines from old soleras, founded or acquired from 1900 until the 1930s. This bone-dry Manzanilla comes from the fishing town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, by the estuary of the Guadalquivir River, where it is aged in American oak casks. Light, fresh, tangy, clean, and crisp, it has a deep straw yellow color and a slightly smoky nose of roasted nuts. Delicate with refreshing acidity, a hint of sea salt on the palate begs to be paired with fresh seafood, oysters, or light tapas. It also makes a lovely dry apéritif!

Emilio Lustau Fino del Puerto Jerez DO "Almacenista" NV
Country: SPAIN / Region: ANDALUSIA / Appellation: JEREZ DO / Varietal(s): PALOMINO FINO --- Founded in 1896 by Don José Ruiz-Berdejo, Emilio Lustau was originally an almacenista, an independent estate that sold most of its wine to large exporting bodegas. In the 1950s, Lustau joined a group of prestigious exporters and is now considered one of the preeminent exporters of quality sherry. Their “Almacenista” line of hand-crafted boutique sherries pays homage to those early origins. This classic fino from El Puerto de Santa María is pale yellow in color with yeasty aromas on the nose. Balanced, dry, and elegant, it offers flavors of date, fig, blood orange, mincemeat, and walnut accented by toasted cedar on the finish. This makes a wonderful apéritif with Serrano ham, cheeses, almonds or olives.

Valdespino Amontillado "Tio Diego" Dry Jerez DO NV
Country: SPAIN / Region: JEREZ / Appellation: JEREZ DO / Varietal(s): PALOMINO FINO --- The Valdespino estate has a reputation for producing exceptional sherry dating back to 1875, with a history of winegrowing since the 13th century. This fine Amontillado is a magnificent value for a 15 year old wine, with a beautiful amber color and medium intensity. Initially aged under flor (a veil of indigenous yeast formed during the fermentation process that gives sherry its characteristic flavors) then left to oxidize, it yields notes of dry flowers and fruits such as dates and orange peel, with hazelnuts and salted caramel, and is very dry on the palate with a balanced and refreshing acidity. Get out some salted almonds and enjoy a match made in food and wine pairing heaven!

Fernando de la Castilla Oloroso Jerez DO NV
Country: SPAIN / Region: JEREZ / Appellation: JEREZ DO / Varietal(s): PALOMINO FINO --- This estate was established in 1999, after the vineyards and winery had been left in shambles. A Norwegian named Jan Pettersen thankfully came in to restore this estate, having worked for the Osborne house for 15 years. When he brought the estate back to life, he eschewed the use of chemicals and focused on unblended and untreated sherries. He also established longer aging regimens for many of the sherries, in particular his "Antique" range. We're delighted to offer his classic Oloroso. This wine is taken from a 14-yr old solera system and is rich and complex from its aging. The wine has spent that time without the influence of flor, like the previous wines in today's tasting. Nutty with orange zest and roasted herbs, this is ideal for grilled meats or mushrooms braised in dashi.
