LOIRE VALLEY VALUES!

Chidaine Sauvignon BlancFrançois Chidaine Sauvignon Blanc Touraine AOC 2013
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: TOURAINE AOC / Varietal(s): SAUVIGNON BLANC --- The cellar of François Chidaine is in Montlouis-sur-Loire, the center of the Loire Valley region known as the Touraine, named for its proximity to the historic city of Tours, about 150 miles southwest of Paris. Long revered in the Loire for his Montlouis and Vouvray wines, Chidaine began producing sauvignon blanc a few years ago with the same impeccable growing and winemaking techniques. Since sauvignon blanc is currently less fashionable, this wine is an incredible value too good to miss! Sumptuous aromas of grapefruit, white flowers, and crushed stone give way to an explosion of citrus, including Meyer lemon and grapefruit, as well as green apple, pear and minerals on the palate. Herbaceous but not grassy, the citrus and stone linger seductively in the mouth. Made from biodynamically grown grapes, the 2013 truly embodies what great Loire sauvignon blanc can be. Enjoy this as a luxurious sipper all on its own, or let it elevate light fish dishes, green vegetables, and goat cheese.

Coteaux du Vendomois roseCave Coopérative du Vendômois Rosé Coteaux du Vendômois AOC
Lieu-dit Cocagne 2014
Country: FRANCE / Region: LOIRE VALLEY / Appellation: COTEAUX DU VENDOMOIS AOC / Varietal(s): PINEAU D'AUNIS --- The historic, sleepy city of Vendôme is bisected by multiple branches of the river Loir, a tributary of the greater Loire river. The landscape west of the city is devoted to agriculture, including many small scale vineyards scattered on the silex and calcaire hillsides. The style of wines here leans toward crisp, clean flavors, little use of oak barrels for aging, and bright wines which are refreshing and unpretentious. This wine was crafted by Nicolas Parmentier, the chief winemaker at the Cave de Vendôme, a facility built in 1929 to allow the many small vignerons in the region a place to sell their crop, and shared equipment to develop the wines at the highest technical efficiency. Grown only in the Loire, the red pineau d’aunis grape was once widely planted, but is now regarded as more of an obscure historical relic as whites such as sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc have taken over. Made of pure pineau d’aunis from the single vineyard “Cocagne”, this wine is pale and dry, with racy acidity and a firm flinty backbone. Scents of strawberry and pink grapefruit yield to flavors of watermelon, pink grapefruit, and citrus zest with a touch of herbaceousness and a clean, minerally finish that make this wonderfully refreshing on a hot, sticky day. Delightful to sip by itself, with a cheese and charcuterie plate, or as a casual partner to a ham sandwich!

TODAY'S SPECIAL GUEST: GREENHOOK GINSMITHS!
Today we're excited to welcome special guest Olivia Szwabo from Greenhook Ginsmiths, just down the river in Brooklyn! She will be here showcasing three different styles: American Dry Gin, Old Tom Gin, and Beach Plum Gin Liqueur (made from rare Long Island beach plums) to help us usher in cocktail season! And if wine is what you prefer, never fear: we also have two new wines to refresh you after the hot spell and long holiday weekend. Albariño from Galicia is the white, and the red is a light, easy going natural red blend from Provence. Both are great early summer selections for drinking alone or pairing with food.

Greenhook GinFeaturing Special Guest: Greenhook Ginsmiths!
Country: USA / Region: NEW YORK STATE / Appellation: N/A / Varietal(s): N/A --- After several years of planning, experimenting, and building their distillery in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, New York, Greenhook Ginsmiths released their flagship offering, American Dry Gin in February 2012 to immediate acclaim. Founded by Steven DeAngelo and his brother Philip, both gin enthusiasts, Greenhook Ginsmiths have quickly emerged as one of the premier American gin makers. Greenhook Ginsmiths distill their gin on a custom-made copper pot still, designed to work in conjunction with a vacuum. This allows them to remove air pressure from the still during distillation, a technique known as vacuum distillation. This has the advantage of allowing the distillation to occur at low temperatures, thus preserving the delicate aromas and volatile oils of the botanicals by preventing them from becoming “cooked” from excessive heat during distillation. This process results in a beautifully fragrant gin with lifted aromas and vibrant flavors.Today Greenhook Ginsmiths representative Olivia Szwabo will be showcasing three gins: their flagship American Dry Gin, Old Tom Gin, and the new Beach Plum Gin Liqueur - a take on sloe gin made from rare Long Island beach plums.
