Ending Community Homelessness Coalition

Austin’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (H&H Week) Nov. 10 - 17 is almost here! Awareness days/weeks/months are interesting things: as Austinites, we’re all aware that homelessness exists – we see it every day. Why have an awareness week for problems we all already know about? Part of it is that many don’t understand the magnitude of the problem. A 2012 census of the homeless in Austin counted 2,244 homeless men and women, barely more than half of them in shelters. Then there are the nuances: the relationship between homelessness and mental illness, chronic medical issues, or legal obstacles like obtaining ID.
So H&HWeek is a great opportunity for Austinites. There are events of every sort: opportunities to give, volunteer, learn, and lend a hand! We owe a BIG THANK YOU to all the volunteers involved in H&H Week. And thanks to H&H Week's Chair, Liz Ihry Simmons! We hope you'll join us!

Children can come together with their parents and neighbors to learn about some of the social issues in Austin in a fun, positive and supportive environment for all.
Thanks to Amber Fogarty and Heather Thomas for their leadership in planning this event! There will be interactive service stations where the crafts and hygiene kits will benefit local nonprofits and the homeless clients whom they serve on a daily basis. A $5 donation per family is encouraged. You can RSVP on our Facebook PageDownload the event flyer to share with your friends. We look forward to seeing you there!
Walk A Mile Through Homelessness - November 14th from 6 - 9 pm

Step into the shoes of your homeless neighbor for an eye-opening experience.
Location: St. Edward's University, 3001 S. Congress Ave., Main Building, 3rd Floor, Maloney Room
This powerful experience begins with a professional simulation from the Missouri Association for Community Action that plunges attendees out of their comfort zones and into the real-life situations of Austin’s homeless. Attendees will be given personas and must accomplish tasks, such as finding food or shelter for a family or applying for benefits while volunteers represent community service providers. The simulation provides a safe way to experience the harsh realities of homelessness and poverty, while also learning about services and groups in Central Texas that help people in these situations. We need volunteers!  If you'd like to help out, email Jennifer Denton, the event chair who is doing a great job plannng this session! Space is limited so please reserve your spot.

November 17th from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
