Congratulations to the DREAM Class of 2013

11 amazing students, 11 incredible stories, and 11 wonderful dreams

It is hard to believe that just a year ago these eleven students stood in this very room at the Ivy Bilingual School shy, nervous, and not knowing a word of English. On June 22, 2013, the 2013 Spring DREAM Graduation kicked off with these very same students introducing themselves in English in front of an audience full of ABC volunteers, teachers, graduates, and staff. During their introductions, each student described their experiences during ABC, their appreciation for ABC, and their dreams after ABC. For many students, ABC was their first trip and life outside of their hometowns. They arrived shy and cautious but now they leave ABC with more ambition and confidence than they could have imagined.
For ABC friends and family, days like June 22nd remind them that ABC is more than an average NGO established to help the lives of underprivileged children. It is rather a network of relationships built on the foundations of education and family. Thus, as the graduates stood before the audience and stated their words of appreciation, one look out into the audience proved just how much of an impact these students have made on the lives of the ABC community.
The graduation program continued with a group activity in which everyone had to guess their secret identities only by asking yes or no questions. Afterwards, the Dream students showcased their performing art’s skills in a skit, a musical performance, and a dance. After the medley of performances, students were awarded with their diplomas and gifts. For lunch, guests and students enjoyed appetizing steak and chicken burrito bowls from Avocado Tree while running around signing yearbooks and taking pictures.
As ABC bids farewell to the Class of 2013, we know that they are empowered with the knowledge and tools they need to conquer their obstacles and realize their dreams. We hope for nothing but the best for these fellow dreamers.

2013 Volunteer Recognition Dinner

Shortly after the Dream Graduation, ABC hosted the annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Ivy Bilingual School with 44 attendees. ABC’s work is driven by the volunteers and their hearts to serve the community and it wouldn’t be right to exclude them from our June festivities. As a result, we gathered to celebrate and acknowledge the countless hours of hard work that the volunteers have put into designing lessons, teaching classes, and most importantly inspiring the children to develop their talents. Groups of program volunteers from each school were recognized and awarded individually. Special achievements were highlighted and words of gratitude were shared throughout the awards ceremony. Six volunteers were given special recognition for their 3 semesters of dedication to ABC. Sporting their whistles, smocks, and instruments, these six volunteers have contributed more to ABC’s TALENT program than we could have asked. We appreciate everything all of our volunteers have done for ABC and we hope they join us again in the semesters to come.

Discovery Your Impact Day

On Saturday the 29th, Discovery Channel volunteers joined students at one of the migrant schools for Discover Your Impact Day.  The weather was perfect for outdoor activities - there were some clouds to shade us from the sun, but no rain or wind to stop us from working.  The morning began with a silly and energetic barnyard icebreaker.  Smiles cracked across everyone's faces as children and adults alike rushed around making silly gestures.  After the introductions, everybody donned colorful ponchos, shoe covers and work gloves and prepared to add a coat of paint to one of the school's walls.

Guihua gave us a crash course on all the steps that needed to be taken for painting, and then we got straight to work.  Two hours flew by as the wall was transformed just in time for a lunch break.  After lunch, some of the volunteers added finishing touches to the wall, while others ran around the playground with the students.  Not before long, the wall was complete with fresh white and bright blue layers that made the old artwork radiate.  At the end of the day, we all gathered in a classroom for some closing words, while Discovery volunteers passed around presents to the students. Discovery is looking forward to repainting the rest of the school walls, and we look forward to seeing them again too!
