Years 4 and 5 Rise to the Challenge at Maths Adventure Day

On Friday 21st June, four pupils from Year 5 – Xannie, Sophie, Oscar and Alex – went with Mrs. Hawkins to Claremont Fan Court School for a maths challenge day.

Working in small groups with Year 5 pupils from other local schools, they tackled a range of problem solving activities, including learning about mazes, symmetry, and how to package a single Pringle to send it through the post!

On a very warm and sunny afternoon, 5H took a walk around Weston Green as part of their history topic on how our area has changed since Victorian times. In the classroom they had already learnt to identify some features of Victorian architecture and proved very good at spotting sash windows, Flemish brick bond, decorative barge boards and patterned brickwork as they strolled around.

The pupils in Kindergarten have been very busy!

Some highlights of this half term have been:
  • Jack and the Beanstalk - focus story
  • Preparation for their end of year production song, ‘Outer Space’
  • Taking part in their Philosophy for Children sessions

The children are learning about the beach environment and how it differs from other environments. We introduced vocabulary related to beaches and the sea and children used their phonetic knowledge to write words. Following on from the 'rock pool experience' the children had at Portsmouth Aquarium, they selected various creatures and studied their characteristics.

On Tuesday afternoon in anticipation of the forthcoming academic year, pupils moved into their new classrooms to meet the teachers by whom they will be taught in September. This is always a very exciting afternoon and this year was no exception with a number of new teachers and assistants joining the Weston Green School team.

Message from Mrs Skivington

‘Summer Fair’ Mufti Day
On Wednesday 19th June, the pupils enjoyed mufti day when, in exchange for a jam jar filled with sweets for the Summer Fair, they could wear their own clothes to school for the day.

There was a wonderful array of pretty summer dresses, favourite characters, football kits and some particularly trendy outfits in KS2.

Joshua looked very dapper in his suit and despite the warm weather remained unruffled all day.

Mrs. Harvey and I had difficulty in choosing the most gorgeous dress but finally settled on that worn by Olivia in Reception.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the day -  it was a wonderful build up to the excitement of the Summer Fair on Sunday afternoon.

Peripatetic Music lessons
As we plan for the year ahead, parents of pupils in Year 1,2,3,4 and 5 have received details of the peripatetic music lessons - piano, violin, drums, guitar and singing - which will be available next year. Liz Skinner who has taught singing this year has been awarded a scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the Masters Opera Course - we thank her for teaching at WGS and wish her continued success.

In her place, Lisa Hartley is thrilled to be joining the Weston Green School Music team in September. As a professional musician, and mother to a seven-year-old son, Lisa really enjoys bringing her energy and passion for music to young children.

On Monday she is teaching a song from "The Lion King" to an entire year group at Harrodian for their version of "Harrodian's Got Talent" !

Lisa believes there is never a dull moment in the wonderful world of music, and she is very much looking forward to meeting all her new pupils!

Sports Day and End of Year Production
Details of the arrangements for Sports Day next week and the end of year production in our final week have been sent home by email.

On Sports Day, Key Stage 1 and 2 Pupils will be dismissed from Kingston Grammar Sports Ground and siblings will be looked after in the EYFS department until you are able to collect them.

Sports Day, alongside the whole school production, form the climax to a fruitful year at WGS and I hope you will all be able to enjoy them with us.

Two seats per pupil are allocated to parents at the end of year production and the timings and details are itemised on the diary dates in this bulletin.

Any queries, please do call either myself or Mrs. Withers. We look forward to welcoming you to our end of year celebrations.
