Weston Green’s Exciting Challenge in Top of the Form Quiz

On Monday 3rd February, Weston Green hosted the first round of interschool ‘Top of the Form’ quizzes, in which 18 schools are participating. A team of four Year 6 pupils, Sophia, Oscar, Alex and Sophie, faced a team of four competitors from Rowan Preparatory School in ten very exciting quiz rounds. Both teams rose to the challenge, answering a broad variety of questions confidently. Pupils were able to confer with their teammates if they did not immediately know the answers.

Our week-long celebration leading up to Chinese New Year was jam-packed with engaging activities, exciting arts and crafts and even a surprise performance by the Reception staff! Our focus shifted momentarily from dinosaurs to dragons as we learnt how to master anything from small hand-held origami dragons to huge dragon heads with long swishy fabric for the body, which we used in a dragon dance around the playground.

On Tuesday 4th February, Year 6 went to the Rose Theatre in Kingston to see a live Jazz Concert. The group performing was made up of a pianist, a guitarist and a drummer and they played a wonderful selection of both traditional and modern Jazz, with five songs in total. One of the songs was written by the pianist herself. It was a pleasure to hear these great musicians play and to watch how skilled they were on their instruments.

Bringing Lessons to Life with Espresso

Year 1 Invite Reception to Watch their Live Volcano Show!

Since January, Weston Green has been using Espresso, a digital learning service, to enhance teaching and learning. Espresso engages pupils in their learning using an amazing wealth of curriculum and cross-curricular resources and really helps to bring Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 lessons alive. In their maths lesson on translating shapes in four quadrants, Year 5 watched a helpful video. As an extension activity, they then used laptops to work their way through a series of tasks.

Year 1 has had an exciting week exploring the world of volcanoes. All of them had the chance to make their very own model volcano and created lots of fantastic fact sheets about everything they had found out. Year 1 felt that it would be a good idea to invite Reception along to a 'Live Volcano Show' where they were going to see if they could erupt their own volcanoes on the playground.

Watch a video and see photos from Year 1's Live Volcano Show!

Message from the Office
We are fast approaching the spring half term – and what a busy first half it has been! We’ve had some delightful trips and events, one of our most recent being a Year 6 visit to the Rose Theatre to watch a lunchtime Jazz concert.

Parent Interview Schedule
Following the half term break I will be sending out appointments for the Parent Interviews on Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 March. Appointments will be held between 6pm and 8pm.

Introduction to Mr Mike Harrison
Parents, you will have received a letter at the end of last month inviting you along to a Coffee Morning, or Afternoon Tea on Thursday 27 February in order to be formally introduced to Weston Green School’s newly appointed Head Teacher, Mr Mike Harrison. The Coffee Morning is for parents of current EYFS children, and those who will join the school in September 2014. Afternoon Tea is for KS1 and KS2 parents. As outlined on the invitation, we ask that no children are brought to either of these sessions, thus allowing Mr Harrison to introduce himself and answer any questions you may have. This will also allow him to spend time talking with you, time allowing. Should you have any questions you would like to address to Mr Harrison, we suggest that you send a maximum of two questions and he will address these during the Q&A part of the session. Please RSVP to ktrown@westongreenschool.org.uk by Friday 14 February to confirm your attendance.

Parking
The issue of parking in and around the school can, at times, create problems for our residents. We ask that you consider local residents, who require access to their drives and houses. We appreciate your consideration as you continue to work with us to ensure that we maintain a harmonious relationship with our neighbours. We have also been monitoring the movements in the turning circle during pick up and drop off times. Please can we reiterate that no parking is permitted at any time within this area.
