Weston Green’s Arctic
Research Project
Skype Session

Pupils in 1W, together with representatives from each class in KS1 and KS2 were lucky enough to have the opportunity to question a scientist, Jamie, currently working in the Arctic about his work and life in the region. The children had thought of a wide variety of questions to ask, including, “How do you cope with the cold?”, which Jamie answered via Skype.

Read a recount of the Arctic Interview from Jessica in Year 5 and watch a video of Jamie, the Arctic explorer, being interviewed by pupils at Weston Green.

Year 6 Enjoy Performance of ‘Private Peaceful’

On Thursday morning, Weston Green welcomed into its Kindergarten classes the children who will be joining Reception in September 2014. It was their first visit to the school and provided them with an opportunity to meet the children who will be in their class next year. During their induction morning the children had the opportunity to take part in a lot of exciting activities, which related to Kindergarten’s topic of Fairy Tales and, in particular, ‘The Frog Prince’ which the Kindergarten children listened to this week.

On Thursday 3 April, Year 6 were entertained and captivated for two hours by a young actor who played the role of Private Peaceful, on stage at Richmond Theatre. To commemorate the centenary of the Great War, we have been studying Michael Morpurgo’s novel, Private Peaceful. Since listening to it on BBC School Radio, we have been very keen to see the drama come to life on stage.

KS1 Are Entertained by ‘Borka: The Goose With No Feathers’

Summer Term Maths Newsletter

KS1 pupils were fortunate enough to be invited to attend a performance by the English Touring Opera at the Vera Fletcher Hall. They watched a specially commissioned opera for children, ‘Borka: The Goose With No Feathers’, based on the book by John Burningham. We received a copy of the book before the performance, which we had read with the children, and had also learnt short sections of two of the songs from a CD, which meant the children were able to join in when they heard these during the performance.

It’s already looking like being another exciting term of maths at Weston Green. Read the Summer Term maths newsletter to find out the latest news about Maths Week, the Maths Adventure Challenge for Year 5 and the Maths Whiz trophy winners.

Message from the Office
The Summer term has got off to a very busy start with a flurry of activities and events. Last week we welcomed several new children and their parents into school for a Reception Induction morning. The children who joined our current Kindergarten classes took part in various activities all of which centred around the topic of ‘Fairy Tales’. On Thursday 15 May we will welcome into school children for entry to Kindergarten September 2014. They will enjoy an afternoon in their new classroom and meeting their potential lifelong school friends.

This week we say ‘au revoir’ to Year 6 as they embark on their week long residential visit to Normandy, and to Year 5 for their trip to Dorset. Both year groups have a full and varied itinerary. Year 6 pupils will take part in activities such as: bread making, visiting a goats cheese farm and a traditional french town market, fencing and archery. The Year 5's agenda is slightly more adventurous including: orienteering, raft building, quad biking, and a zip wire! We very much look forward to seeing the photographs on their safe return.

We would like to say a big thank you to the parents for their donations at the end of Spring Term. We collected £118.41 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

A number of dates and events have been added to the website calendar this week so please ensure your diaries are up to date to avoid missing any important school information.

As you will already be aware Mrs Harvey is currently unwell and has been taken into hospital. She is recovering well and she has asked me to thank you for your best wishes and all of your kind messages. We hope to welcome Mrs Harvey back to school, in good health very soon.
