Introducing Phonics Bug for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

This term Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are using a new phonics programme called Phonics Bug. It is a fresh and modern reading programme that will further help Skippers Hill children to develop all their core decoding skills. This, in turn, will hopefully set all pupils on the path to a lifelong love of reading.

In Science with Miss Henry, the pupils in Year 3 have been making skeletons out of dog biscuits. Watch a video of two pupils explaining how the activity has helped them to understand more about the bones in the human body.

Skippers has been accredited with NACE (National Association for Able Children in Education) as a school "showing consistent commitment to provision for more able, gifted and talented pupils in school".

Year 1 has created some beautiful work as part of their Harvest celebrations, including paintings of apples trees.

Watch a video of the children reciting their Harvest poem.

All eyes were on the weather forecast as we had our second attempt at camping this term. There was palpable excitement as Friday progressed and this was not diminished as everyone pulled out a variety of tents, sleeping bags and of course, vast quantities of sweets.

Four pupils from Year 5 were chosen to represent Skippers last Thursday, at a Mathematics Challenge organised for this year group by St. Andrews Prep School in Eastbourne. Eve, Matilda, Saskia and Lucy spent the afternoon competing against 20 other prep schools in the area.

At the end of last year, all of the children who were in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 were given a diary to complete over the summer holidays as an optional activity. The aim of the diary challenge was to benefit the children’s literacy skills in many different ways: handwriting, spelling, phonics, punctuation, sentence formation and language development.
