Give A Mile Launches U.S. GoFundMe Campaign

On July 1, 2021,  Give A Mile launched  a 31-day campaign to raise $10,000 through GoFundMe Charity. Give A Mile has provided more than 767 flights to connect terminally ill patients with their loved ones in Canada and has recently begun offering flights in the United States. This campaign will help us towards our  goal of providing 50 flights this year in the United States. Give A Mile has already provided 14 flights so far in the United States.

“The campaign timing is perfect as the United States is at a critical COVID vaccination turning point and travel is really starting to open up,” said Kevin Crowe, founder and CEO of Give A Mile. “We have strong relationships with hospice facilities across the United States, and they are sending us many requests to help their patients connect with loved ones.”

Give A Mile changes lives. Darlene, a recipient along with her twin children, were among the first 14 flights Give A Mile has provided so far in 2021 in the United States. Donors from around the globe can participate in the GoFundMe Charity campaign. The minimum donation amount is $10.

Give A Mile has continued to provide flights of compassion during COVID, working with recipients to ensure compliance with health regulations. The number of flights provided had increased significantly every year since the organization’s founding in 2013 but slowed slightly in 2020 due to the COVID challenges. Give A Mile provided 90 flights in 2020 vs 123 in 2019. Give A Mile has provided 31 flights so far this year and is tracking toward 90 flights total.

This is Give A Mile’s first campaign targeting U.S. donors for cash. The first campaign to raise miles was in March 2021 in partnership with United Airlines’ Miles on a Mission program. The 28-day campaign goal of 500,000 miles was reached in a rapid 8-hour period, demonstrating how much this mission resonates. Give A Mile started in Canada and has a direct donation integration with Air Canada’s loyalty program Aeroplan and also runs fundraisers throughout the year.

“We are so excited for this GoFundMe Charity Campaign,” said Crowe. “This is going to jump start our work in the U.S. and help us make an even greater positive difference.”

Flight Story - Karina Visits Her Father

Give A Mile was able to provide a flight for Karina so that she could be with her critically ill father.

I'm not sure where to start...

My Father went for a very straightforward medical procedure on April 7 (an artery stent)  and was supposed to be back home on April 8th. Sadly, a simple procedure took a dramatic turn and my dad had a very bad reaction and experienced a respiratory crisis and his heart stopped. Thankfully, with the benefit of  CPR and doctors' expertise, my father survived, but he was put on  dialysis and a respirator, and he was in a medical coma. We were told that he was in critical condition and I should see him very soon

With deep gratitude to Kevin, Stacey and Give a Mile, I arrived in Buenos Aires on April 20. On April 22 we had a call from ICU that my father had  a second cardiac arrest. They performed CPR,  once again resuscitating my father. Soon thereafter, he got pneumonia and they had to perform a tracheotomy. After this, he got another infection. After six weeks in the ICU and ten days in a regular room, I was able to spend  some time with with my father, remaining with him for ten days in a neuroscience rehabilitation centre.

My dad is now back home, lucid with all his brain working excellently.  He is working hard to recover and walk independently. The Doctors are calling my dad The Miracle Man. He is the first patient they have ever experience who recovered  from an Iodine overdose, three  infections and two heart attacks.

They also think that having his children with him helped him to fight hard. We are celebrating that he is back home and recovering slowly.

I have spent quality and healing time with my father and I am deeply grateful to  Give a Mile and for miracles!
