HISPA San Antonio 2013 Youth Conference "Take Action, Achieve your Dreams" - March 1, 2013

2013 HISPA San Antonio Youth Conference

Latino professionals joined forces to provide both inspirational and practical advice about educational and career prospects to 250 students at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Hands-on activities included presentations that ranged from the physics behind rocketry to archeology. This year’s keynote speaker was Shayla Rivera, the Funny Rocket Scientist. Rivera showcased her career in engineering and her past work experience with NASA. For the second year, the UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives was the co-host of the program. The office works to increase the college-going rate of Texans by assisting students who are traditionally undeserved and underrepresented in higher education. HISPA is honored to have had the support of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI). Dr. Juan Andrade, President of USHLI, provided an outstanding inspirational address as part of USHLI’s Student Leadership Series. Conference sponsors included Educational Testing Service (ETS), Southwest Airlines and Staybridge Suites. HISPA partnered with the University of Phoenix, St. Mary’s University, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the National Hispanic University, CoolSpeak, Shayla Rivera and the Civil Engineering Consultants. Other supporting organizations included the Texas Chapter 13 173rd Airborne Brigade Association (which provided scholarships for the students), College Board, NACME, Adelante, MAES, The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and Café College.

Role Models that inspire us!

Francisco Rivera
Francisco Rivera, who works for USAA, is an active HISPA Role Model in San Antonio. Francisco moved to San Antonio from New Jersey two years ago. He has been a strong supporter of our initiatives in Texas.  His commitment to HISPA has grown stronger helping the organization in a variety of ways.  He participated as an active volunteer during the 2012 Youth Conference and as a HISPA Role Model speaking at a school.  He also presented a workshop focused on Math and Science during the Youth Conference this year.  Francisco's commitment to HISPA is truly inspiring and the students truly love him - Thank you Paco!

Once again, HISPA was highlighted January 17th, "National Mentorship Day" on Univision 41

HISPA was invited for the second time to speak about the importance of role models in the lives of our youth. Merijoel Durán from Univision 41 "Al Despertar" interviewed Mayra Cáceres, who has been part of the HISPA family since its inception, a devoted HISPA supporter and exemplary role model. During the interview, Mayra emphasized the importance of role models in the lives of middle school students and how their thought process and perspective of college is altered. Video
