Kate Hawkesby: Does NZ want corporates producing potent cannabis here?

Family First Comment: Well said, Kate! 👍 As a media person AND as a parent, you’ve understood the real issues behind this referendum – and the reason to vote NO.

As we edge ever closer to our referendum next year on cannabis, the debate’s heating up.

That’s a good thing. We need to be as well informed as we possibly can before we vote.
It’s easy to come at these issues from whatever your personal experiences or interests are.

But part of living in a democratic society is being able to look at debate from all sides. At the moment with the legalise cannabis debate, I tend to come at it from my standpoint as a parent.

But one angle which pricked my interest this week was that of its move into the hands of big corporates – and with that, it’s increased potency.

If we look to overseas examples, which we should, a Colorado native and author of the book “Weed, Inc”, Ben Cort has been shedding some light on what’s happened in his hometown.

Colorado legalised cannabis in 2012. Since then, commercial interests have taken over sales and they’re making millions.

Not only that, the product’s been hijacked. The ‘natural plant’ as cannabis enthusiasts from the 1970s may’ve called it, is no longer just a plant. It’s concentrated and distilled into edibles, eye drops, gum, lollies, nasal sprays, ice cream – whatever you can think of now contains THC – which is the active ingredient in marijuana. The part that gets you high.

Cort says it’s so dramatically more potent now than it was back then. Where plants of the 70s may’ve contained about 4 per cent THC, the levels now are more like 42 per cent.

Why? Because it’s now being grown in glasshouses and commercial production facilities, with pesticides, fertilisers and metals added to it.

In his TED talk, Cort cites a mate of his who quit working in one of the cannabis growing facilities due to his fears about the amount of chemicals he was around. Their employers were asking them to wear Hazmat suits – that’s how much chemical spraying was going onto these plants.

The arguments against – that it’s a health issue and not a criminal one – I hear that.
But don’t we create a bigger health issue for ourselves than we already have with those other legalised corporatised addictive drugs such as tobacco and alcohol?
They’re legal: look how that turned out.

Is this what we really want for our country?

A more potent drug than ever before, and in the hands of corporate giants milking it for every cent?

I wouldn’t have thought so.

Transgender clinic for kids warn lobby groups & pushy parents are exposing young patients to ‘long-term damage’ (UK)

Mar 14, 2019 11:30 am

Daily Mail 17 February 2019
Family First Comment: If you think helping a child change their gender is an appropriate response to gender dysphoria (either genuine or ‘coached’), you have to read this.
From a UK 🇬🇧 govt clinic that supports transgender young people!

Doctors at an NHS gender identity clinic have warned young patients could be exposed to ‘long-term damage’ due to lobby groups and pushy parents.

The Tavistock Gender Identity Development Clinic in north London has an ‘inability to stand up to pressure’ from campaigners and parents demanding fast-track transitions, doctors have said

The clinic, part of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, is also providing ‘woefully inadequate’ care, with some staff citing ‘very serious ethical concerns’ about their workplace, a recent report said.

The report, made by former staff governor David Bell, said some children ‘take up a trans identity as a solution’ to ‘multiple problems such as historic child abuse in the family, bereavement, homophobia, and a very significant incidence of autism spectrum disorder’.

It also claimed the children may have been ‘coached’ by campaign groups and said the histories of ‘highly disturbed or complex’ patients were not thoroughly investigated, the Sunday Times reported.

The Bell report said many children questioning their identity may have ‘learnt through online resources [or] coaching from from parents or peers exactly what to say in order to get the results they want’.

One staff member said: ‘You suddenly see groups of kids who at initial interview give exactly the version of transition details, reasons, etc. I have overheard them in the corridor, parents coaching children before the interview and chiding them.

‘I feel I have let down a large number of children’.

Governor of NHS trust that runs England’s only gender clinic for children quits amid claims youngsters are being rushed into transitioning
Daily Mail 25 February 2019
A governor of the NHS trust which runs England’s only gender clinic for children has quit amid claims youngsters are being rushed into transitioning without being given enough guidance.

Marcus Evans, who had worked at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust for more than 30 years, said he has serious concerns about ‘what is going on in the gender identity world’.

His decision to quit followed a damning internal report which claimed that the trust’s Gender Identity Development Service, an NHS service, was ‘not fit for purpose’.

A letter has been signed by 25 other clinicians at the trust who are upset at how the concerns raised in the report have been handled.

The report by Dr David Bell concluded that ‘children’s needs are being met in a woeful, inadequate manner and some will live on with the damaging consequences’.
