Wesley eWeekly

a weekly email about the ministry of Wesley United Methodist Church
From Pastor Jane

I have decided to start a new NEST at Wesley in the hope that someone will be willing to take it on at the end of the year.  Here's what I have in mind:  We will meet once a month at a time that is mutually agreeable to discuss theological themes in modern fiction.  I "borrowed" this idea from Rev. Dr. Naomi Annandale who used this as her Bible study when she was a candidate for ordination.  She now holds a position with Discipleship Ministries in Nashville.
When I finished seminary, I promised myself that I would not read anything professional in bed and I have been faithful to that promise.  As a result, I have read countless books, some wonderful, some less so.  Unless a book is seriously "brain candy" there are usually some theological themes that can be teased out.  I have Naomi's original paper, but we can look at any number of books.  They need not be written by Christian writers or have a Christian theme (actually, I find books from other religious traditions to be extremely theological!).

If you think this is something which tweaks your interest, please let me know and we will set up a time to get together to set a time and a book to study.  I generally have 3-4 books going at the same time, but fiction is reserved for bed or driving.  I keep a log of what I have read, so I have many titles at my fingertips!  I truly look forward to hearing from a lot of you!!

Happy reading and many blessings,

PJ

This Week's Prayer and Scripture
Prayer

Glorious God, we like to practice random acts of kindness. Your Word even confirms that we further your kingdom when we show kindness and compassion to another person. We pray that Jesus' life and teaching may be our example for sharing intentionally our talents, prayers, time, and witness. We humbly ask you to help us express our faith as you have taught us. Amen.

Philippians 2: 1-10

Imitating Christ’s Humility

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
   as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
   being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
   he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
   even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him
   and gave him the name
   that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus
   every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Prayer For Ukraine
Prayer:
We are all aware of the atrocities taking place in Ukraine.  It’s frustrating to feel so helpless as we see people struggle daily to defend their country and stay alive.  We truly want to help, but feel so helpless.  But we are not helpless!
We know, as Christians, the power of prayer.  Jesus has told us many times that He is listening as we ask for His help in all things. So, as a church, may we come together in prayer for Ukraine.
Each day as we are about to take time for lunch, let each of us pause and remember Ukraine and her brave people in a prayer. And we can be aware each noontime that our whole church is lifting up the Ukrainians in prayer, everyone praying in their own way, but together. This is a powerful thing and it will make a difference.
Let us come together as a church to do this.  Thank you all for joining us.
