Wesley eWeekly

a weekly email about the ministry of Wesley United Methodist Church
From Pastor Jane
A number of years ago, I attended a series of workshops about discipleship at Discipleship Ministries (then the General Board of Discipleship) in Nashville.  One of the presenters, Carol Krau, used a phrase that I have "stolen" for my own lexicon..."I've noticed and I wonder."  In the past few weeks, I've noticed a lot...and I've wondered a lot too,  Some of these wonderings have been voiced in sermons which has caused some pretty interesting reactions!

When I gave you "homework" on my first Sunday with you, it was primarily to answer some of my questions prior to asking them.  As an outsider, with no real history of who you are or where you have been or why you stay or what frustrates you or any number of other issues or items related to the church, hearing from you was vitally important.  So, for those who shared your stories, thank you from the bottom of my heart.  For those who have questioned some of the things that I have said while preaching, thank you for clarifying where I may have missed something or misheard something or was just plain wrong.

Interim ministry is often riddled with missteps because congregations are reluctant to share the truth about who they are right now.  Your history has been rich and varied, but post-Covid presents a whole new reality.  On-line worship is here to stay.  Some folks may never come back to in-person worship.  Our culture is vastly different than it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago and is changing so rapidly it makes me dizzy!  Moving backwards is not an option if we want to be relevant.  So keep the comments coming!  You will not hurt my feelings by being honest with me.  I've been around the block a few times, but this is a new experience for me and I don't know what I don't know...you need to keep telling me what those things are.

Communication is the #1 issue facing most churches and Wesley is not exempt.  We cannot assume that "everyone knows" because everyone does NOT know.  Personally, I would rather be told something repeatedly than not to be told at all.  For the time being, let's over-communicate, talk to each other and send emails...someone will surely tell us when it becomes too much!  In the meantime, I will notice and I will wonder.

Many blessings,
PJ

George Armstrong will bring the message, "The Greatest Wonder?" this Sunday during our worship service based on scripture from   Psalm 71:1-6 and
Jeremiah 1:4-10

About George Armstrong
I am a lifelong resident of Lebanon NH and have been a member of The Lebanon United Methodist Church for 40 years. During that span I have been blessed with the opportunity to share in worship with numerous churches other than my own, Currently I lead worship on a monthly basis in N. Charlestown and Claremont. I have also filled the pulpit numerous times in Lebanon, Newport, and White River Jct., Vt. this year. When I formulate a worship service I almost always use the lectionary readings as I find it gives me a chance to study and opine on what the scriptures have to say as opposed to speaking on my interests and tailoring scripture to fit them. I'm greatly looking forward to sharing worship with the people of the Wesley United Methodist Church.

 Children's time will be with Veronica Nugent and Sunday School will be offered by Ruth Engel.

Join us for worship online on our YouTube Channel or Facebook page and invite your friends and family to do so as well. Here is the link for online attendance to let us know you've been with us.

This Weeks Prayer and Scripture
Prayer

Dearest God of all that is, In the name of Love, may your gift of our lives lift the world to more fully experience the value of loving. Let us be an instrument of your grace to honor all life by easily and effectively, doing and being an example of your will. And by our actions, and heartfelt dreams that guide those actions, help use to create and promote unity through loving. Let there be greatness in each life, experienced and acknowledged together. Let this greatness promote an active awareness to restore and preserve the beauty of all creation. For all that we are, and for all that we can be, We choose to dedicate our lives to you and the ministry to which you are calling us.   Amen.

Jeremiah 1:4-10

Jeremiah’s Call and Commission

Now the word of the Lord came to me saying,
‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’
Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.’ But the Lord said to me,
‘Do not say, “I am only a boy”;
for you shall go to all to whom I send you,
and you shall speak whatever I command you.
Do not be afraid of them,
for I am with you to deliver you,

says the Lord.’
Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me,
‘Now I have put my words in your mouth.
See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.’

Psalm 71

Prayer for Lifelong Protection and Help

In you, O Lord, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame.
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
 incline your ear to me and save me.
Be to me a rock of refuge,
  a strong fortress, to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.

Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel.
For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.
Upon you I have leaned from my birth; it was you who took me from my mother’s womb.
My praise is continually of you.

Prayer For Ukraine
Prayer:
We are all aware of the atrocities taking place in Ukraine.  It’s frustrating to feel so helpless as we see people struggle daily to defend their country and stay alive.  We truly want to help, but feel so helpless.  But we are not helpless!
We know, as Christians, the power of prayer.  Jesus has told us many times that He is listening as we ask for His help in all things. So, as a church, may we come together in prayer for Ukraine.
Each day as we are about to take time for lunch, let each of us pause and remember Ukraine and her brave people in a prayer. And we can be aware each noontime that our whole church is lifting up the Ukrainians in prayer, everyone praying in their own way, but together. This is a powerful thing and it will make a difference.
Let us come together as a church to do this.  Thank you all for joining us.
